    United’s Third Quarter Financial Results

    - United has announced its third quarter results for the three months from January 2020 to March 2020. United’s financial year runs July 2019 - June 2020.

    - The full financial impact of the Covid crisis will not be known until the fourth quarter results (April to June) are announced later in the year. Nevertheless, United’s revenue and profit took a big fall compared to the same three months a year ago. Partly as a result of no Champions League this season and partly the cessation of football altogether from mid-March. The club reckon Covid related effects reduced revenue by £23m for the quarter.

    - The big question is whether United has enough cash to pay its bills over the next few months? As we’ve said before, the club was generating less cash this year even before Covid. As at March 2020, United had £90m in cash which was £100m smaller than the same point in 2019. United has an unused overdraft facility of £150m - giving a total headroom of £240m if it’s needed.

United has three big costs. a) Salaries. £70m every three months. b) Transfer fees. We’ve been told that the club owes transfer fees of approximately £125m although we’re not sure of the dates these are due. United is owed c.£50m from other clubs (primarily Lukaku which is being paid in instalments by Inter although the majority is not due this year). c) Other operational costs such as property cost, fees to casual workers which are still being paid; utilities etc. Annually c£108m.

The club has detailed cash flow forecasts based upon different scenarios but we do know that as a result of Covid United is “closely controlling costs and reviewing planned capital expenditures”. No surprise there. The usual Glazer tactic is salami slicing costs whereby they hammer down on every cost line. It’s pernicious and harmful. The expansion and refurbishment of Carrington will get kicked into touch. We would not bet on any big transfer fees this summer.

    - In the nine months between July 2019 to March 2020, the club paid out £211m in cash for transfer fees - Maguire’s £78m fee was paid up-front plus several other arrivals and payments on Fred’s £53m fee from 2018. On top of this United still owes a further £125m in transfer fees to other clubs.

    - Commercial revenue was up slightly compared to the same period last year. Well done Dickie, have a cream cake big boy. That said, the fourth quarter numbers will be interesting. Much will depend on the ‘force majeure’ clause in the contracts with each sponsor. This is a clause that frees both parties from liability or obligation when an extraordinary event occurs beyond their control such as a pandemic. With no football being played, commercial partners may try and negotiate reduced payments although the club did say that it does not expect any disruption to commercial revenues. Let’s see.

    - Previously, United had been forecasting revenue for the full year of £560m to £580m. Unsurprisingly, it has cancelled this forecast and will not give a fresh one at the moment.

    - It is incredible that 15 years after the Glazers’ leveraged buy-out, the club still has a debt mountain of $650m. These loans were taken out in the US and are denominated in dollars. £519m is the amount showing in the accounts. It costs c.£25m to service the debt each year.

Confirmation of no summer tour. India had been planned but is now binned.

Full-year financials to 30th June 2020 will be announced September.

"To try and close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City they are going to have to stop buying to improve themselves. At the moment they’re vying for the same type of players. It’s a double-edged sword.

"When Manchester United were dominating all the best players wanted to come to Man United and they wanted to come for a reason, because they had the opportunity of winning and that’s what it’s about.

"When you don’t have the opportunity to win you’re not going to say you will go to Man United if Liverpool or Man City are interested. Instead, you’re going to go to one of those clubs where you can win things.

"That’s the toughest sell for Ole at the moment, saying 'I think you should sign for Manchester United instead of Man City or Liverpool because we’re building for the next two to three years and then in the next two to three years we could win the league.' For me, if I’m a player I would be thinking 'have I got two or three years?'

"Or do I want to start winning things now and then in three years' time if I’ve won it three times and then they come in for me then I could consider that I’ll move then. To convince players at the peak of their playing career to join a club and a project that will take two or three years, you’ve got to be a very good salesman."...

"Upamecano, 21 years old, he’s probably desperate to go somewhere like Manchester United. Why aren’t they doing that deal? Especially when you watch how Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof played the other day. We know that the goalkeeper [is struggling]. I think Dean Henderson coming in there is not going to help David de Gea. I think it’s going to put him under pressure knowing that there’s somebody who’s going to cause him problems, and I think we’re going to see more mistakes out of him. But why aren’t they doing that deal [for Upamecano]? Why aren’t they going and doing the deal? Why aren’t they doing the Jadon Sancho deal? They are dithering, and what’s going to happen is they are going to get caught up and passed"

"The thing with Harry Maguire, being at Leicester and Hull before, is that I believe his game is the same as it was there: he made those same mistakes. He gets himself too square sometimes, he pulls himself out of position, you can get in behind him. Those things are down to coaching. I know we’re talking about money, but if they’re coaching him right – as a footballer, coming out [with the ball], perfect – but defensively the top teams will annihilate those two as centre-halves.’...

"You only have to look at what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is doing in respective of tactics, I don’t see what Manchester United’s pattern of play is.

"One of the most significant things that I saw with the Palace game was, they’ve literally gone back to a team that didn’t have a clue what they were doing.

"Pogba got taken off in the end, Bruno Fernandes looked pedestrian in there. And you think to yourself, that’s got to come back down to the coach. For me, it’s got to come back down to how they’re being coached. Because the movement was very static up front – and you’ve got players who can get you the ball – but the movement is wrong. Anthony Martial is too far out on the left where Rashford wants to come in from. They’ve got a lot of problems I think.’...

“They made us work hard for it. But that's what we need, we need to get competitive games and minutes into the legs of our players because normally we're in a pre-season after such [a] short training [period] and pre-season games are different, so I was happy with the competitive nature of this game and of course happy to go through because we'll get another chance next midweek to get more match minutes into players.”

“It's great for them to get minutes as well but also goals. I think the first one [scored by Rashford], I like that goal because the ball goes forward and it goes quick. It's not perfect but Mason gets hold of it, leaves it for Marcus and you can see that he's composed in his finishing. And Mason, you see his chance there, he can go inside, he can go outside, he had one other one before when he went with his right, now he went with his left. Of course, it's great for them to get off the mark.”...
