"Anthony did really develop last season. I thought he made big strides towards becoming the striker we know he can be

"But Anthony is no different from other players in our team that he’s not had a pre-season as normal, and he’s working to get to his peak form.

"Obviously he lost three games – or three-and-a-half, almost four games – because he had a three-game suspension and it [the sending-off] was very early in the Tottenham game. So he’s lost a bit of football. Too much football. He scored against Basaksehir last time a good header, so we hope that he’s just going to continue working hard to get to his best again.’

"We want Anthony to keep calm. I thought with France, against Portugal, he showed his qualities as a centre-forward, getting into positions. Then Patricio made a few good saves, and that might have affected Anthony’s confidence.

"For me, it’s him getting the chances – that’s the big thing. Because I know his conversion rate has always been good. Maybe at the moment the keepers have made a few good saves against him, but that will change quickly.’...

Sad to hear that ex-Red Maurice Setters has passed away

    Statement from United

Manchester United is deeply saddened to hear that Maurice Setters has passed away at the age of 83.

The former wing-half made 194 appearances for the Reds following his transfer from West Bromwich Albion in January 1960, enjoying his finest moment for United as part of the famous FA Cup-winning side of 1963, which secured our vital first post-Munich trophy with that Wembley victory over Leicester City.Devon-born Setters had come through the ranks at local side Exeter City before making his name in the top flight with West Brom. He signed for United for £30,000, with Matt Busby looking for a replacement for Wilf McGuinness who had recently broken his leg, and his feisty and combative style made him a key player during a transitional period for the club.

A popular member of the squad – he struck up a close friendship with Bobby Charlton and was best man at Charlton’s wedding in 1961 – Setters quickly became club captain.

By the time of that FA Cup final victory in 1963, Setters had passed on the armband to Noel Cantwell but he still had a big part to play for the Reds, making 46 appearances in total in the 1963/64 season as United finished second in the league to Liverpool. However, the emergence of Nobby Stiles saw his first-team opportunities restricted in the following campaign, and Setters moved to Stoke City in November, 1964.

Following his retirement as a player – having enjoyed further spells with Coventry City and Charlton Athletic – he had three-and-a-half years as manager of Doncaster Rovers before linking up with Jack Charlton, initially in a partnership as Jack’s assistant at Sheffield Wednesday. Setters’ nine years as Jack’s right-hand man with Republic of Ireland will provide particularly vivid memories for United’s army of fans across the Irish Sea, with the pair helping to lead Ireland to their first World Cup finals in Italia 90 and repeating the feat with the next tournament in the USA in 1994.

We send our condolences to Maurice’s family and friends at this difficult time – rest in peace....

"I'd never given that prospect any consideration, but now I have thought about it, I could actually see him moving up the pitch.

"He wouldn't be a 20-goals-a-season striker, by any means, but he has all the qualities to be an outstanding link player. I feel Pogba could affect games the way Steven Gerrard used to do when I played with him for Liverpool and England — he's that good.

"He's got that star quality about him, you see it when he plays for France. I've been on the pitch with Pogba and always felt there were two or three gears in reserve that he could easily engage.

"The one thing that has always confused me about him is the desire. Does he want to do it? If a game was going badly, Stevie would take it upon himself to beat a couple of men and score a goal — grab things by the scruff of the neck.

"Pogba has the ability to do that. I'd love to see him make it happen."...

"So I like the five subs, I also like the size of the squads because the players feel involved, especially during lockdown,”

“Sometimes if you're told you're not in the squad you've got to stay at home and you can't go and see your friend or see the game with a friend.

“That's another mental welfare that we have to look after with the players, so Champions League, I like it.”...

"He is a good friend, that’s why he speaks so well of me,"

"I always thought he is one of the players who, if he keeps going and keeps improving, in the way he was doing in the Academy, he can be a very, very good midfielder.

"I really like him; the way he plays on the ball, his cleverness, his way of looking forward, looking for a pass and also his attitude off the ball. So, whenever he was here, I always tried to encourage him and said what I believed he could be as a player.

"I always tried to motivate him and give him confidence as I think, when you’re that age, you need confidence and trust - not only from the manager but also from your team-mates.

"I wish him all the best at Watford and I am sure he will do well,”

“He’s a great guy and a very good player, as I’ve said before, because he keeps improving every day."...

“Well, I’m very happy Edinson has come here because he is a very professional player, a very committed team-mate and very driven, during all his career,”

“Also, Edinson is very humble, of course, and he is a guy who likes the countryside. I think he’s settled now in his house in the countryside, which he is happy about. Of course, I told him that it is important to have a couple of umbrellas, not only one, in Manchester so I am sure he’s got a few! He is loving where he lives and his family is also happy.“...
