"Tyrone Mings’ head stamp was horrible. It was difficult to watch, but Zlatan’s elbow wasn’t much better and, let’s be honest, if you’re jumping in the air, you know how high you have to raise your elbows to miss another person’s head. I wasn’t buying his excuse. It wasn’t nice to see the elbow, and there’s no doubt that he deserves the ban for it. You can’t get away with anything now thanks to the retrospective bans, and you have to be a bit cleverer than a blatant elbow.

"He didn’t need to do it like that. He’s now missing a really crucial game against Chelsea because he lost his head, although I can understand why he did after the stamp. Whether Mings meant to do it or not, it didn’t look nice. It’s funny how the game has changed now, though. In my time, if someone had have done that to me and stamped on my face, I guarantee before that whistle went I’d have gone right through them. I’d maybe not have reacted as quickly as that, but I’d have took the ball, bided my time and got my own back. For me, an elbow in the face is not the way to do that. Maybe be prepared to take a yellow card later in the game, when you know you are winning and go in with the tackle"

"And if you don’t get your revenge? You finish the game and you look for the next time you meet them. That’s how it was when we played. You knew if you stitched someone up – whether it was Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira – that, before the end of the game, you were going to get one. It was part and parcel of the game"
