Rio Ferdinand gives his thoughts on Ravel Morrisson

Dear Reds, we need your help - https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

If you think what we do is important, then a subscription right now is a game changer for our future as an independent fanzine in the year ahead. No football = no games to sell at. We need your support now more than ever. We believe the terraces of Old Trafford and its culture is a little bit stronger when Red News is around, and that our fanzine still provides a strong voice, and a different take on supporting MUFC that is worth keeping.

So on our 33rd anniversary we are opening up our new advanced annual subscription campaign because without your subscriptions, we will not be able to continue, nor be around in 2021. With your support, we will. We pride ourselves on still being a voice for normal Reds just like you. For giving space for reasoned, well thought out opinion, and for the type of exclusives and gossip you know us well for. And to praise, or hold the club to account, where it is appropriate. To shine a light where it is needed. A different type of fanzine. But one that still holds the same principles as when we first started in April 1987.

We have weathered many storms, including a decline in matchday sales, and all the changes, both good or bad, at Old Trafford in our time, but events right now out of our control are different... We only survive because of our readers. Without advertising, you keep us alive.

If games are behind closed doors, we will still publish. We WILL still publish. If needs be we will make certain mags double issues every second month like our one will be in May 2020.

The target this summer is 333 Reds.

    Thank you - https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

"Fergie told me to step away from doing stuff with Ravel,"

"He told me the club would deal with the situation.

"He could have become a £100million player.

"Ravel was chatting to someone sent to look after him, just chatting nonsense with this guy then would go do what he wanted to do.

"It's a tricky situation because some of these kids' home lives are more difficult than we know about. You have to steer him. His talent, I haven't seen a kid of that age at 14, 15 like that in my life. The game comes so easy to him. It's effortless. But ability will only get you so far, mentality and attitude will take you to the top and help you stay there."

"Ravel, it hasn't gone the way his ability suggested it should have done,"

"The press didn't help this kid. They tarnished his name more than it should have been. He needed help, not being vilified.

"He got a bad name at times. People that meet him say 'oh, he's pleasant isn't he, he's a nice kid? That's the media. They had given him a perception."

“The United head scout called me, he was like: ‘Berbs, we are looking at this kid Martial and wanted to ask what you think,’”

“I told him this boy is unbelievable, the things he can do. He can be a great player, he just needs someone to guide him on the pitch.

“Of course, I'm still waiting for my commission!”

“In training and at the club, players know that the player is good. You notice when the guy arrives, who’s the ace, who’s the player who maybe can’t take the level. Fred never had this problem with us. He’s a very good player. Very good.

“So when he arrived and it wasn’t working out, things are normal. In the first year he arrived he had to adapt to England, his family. These are normal things that maybe for fans who want to see this on the pitch, they don’t understand.

“But with time now he relaxed, he’s calm, the family is living well, he’s training better every day. This year he was better at each game. And he’s feeling good in the team, and now he can show his football. I already knew he was good, it was just for everyone outside to see the real Fred.”

He is in good form, he is doing his exercises every morning. He has got his dumbbells out, he is on his rowing machine, his walking machine, so yeah he is doing well"

“It’s the best partnership ever in Premier League history. Trust me.

“Listen, strikers were playing out on the wings some times because they didn’t want to come up against us, it was mad!

“There’s always going to be that one player in your career who’s difficult. He might not be the best player on the planet, but his style is made to hurt your style. And Torres might have just been that for Nemanja.

“He’s someone he found difficult to play against. And he’s probably the only player I’ve seen consistently give Vida a hard time, and he got sent off in a couple of the games didn’t he, early on in the games.

“But listen, Torres was a great player and when he was in his pomp when he was at Liverpool, he was one of the best strikers about. He was a devastating striker.

“But with me one-v-one, he didn’t cause me any problems if I’m honest. That’s just the way it is.

“One of my hardest strikers to play against when people ask me – other than the ones that are obvious, like Ronaldo and Messi – was Kevin Davies. You would never expect that.

“But he was always tough to play against for me, always caused me the most problems. He always was physical, just obstructing you all the time.

“The ball might be over there [away from you] but he’s grabbing you and all this stuff. So you would never expect that, but Torres would have been that for Nemanja probably. But we never really spoke about it.

“It’s mad, our relationship, we spent a lot of time with each other after training, in and around the training ground just chatting about loads of stuff, but it wasn’t about our relationship on the pitch.

“It wasn’t like, ‘Vida you know when you go tight with Suarez, I’m going to be behind covering’. It was nothing like that. We never spoke like that at all.

“But our relationship was like there was something in the air that I knew he was going to go there, and if he went there I would go here. If I went here, he was there.

“Partnerships in the game are not necessarily built just on the training pitch, sometimes you’re just blessed that someone comes into your life at that time and it’s come together just like that. And that’s what we had.”

You can help our independent fanzine survive - by subscribing now.

              https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

Dear Reds, we need your help.

This is our third annual subscription campaign. Each one keeps the fanzine alive for the following season. The current surreal events mean that of course we do not know what type of United, and football, lies ahead for the next year. But we know this will pass and United will return. And whatever happens, we aim to continue to publish, and then be selling as soon as we can outside Old Trafford as we have for the past 33 years.

MUFC has always had a strong fanzine culture, with strong voices all around Old Trafford, and we are just one of many, yet it's vital we can plan ahead without worrying month by month.

If games are behind closed doors, we will still publish. We WILL still publish. If needs be we will make certain mags double issues every second month like our one will be in May 2020.

The target this summer is 333 Reds.

It doesn't sound like much. That is a huge deal for us. The campaign will end on July 31st, and hopefully we can make target like we have over the last two summers.

For less than the price of a pint, each month. Every single one of you can make the difference. And you will get all 10 mags (or if needed, 5 double issues) we will publish in the coming year.

We always prefer print because it is our preferred way, and also helps our printer, but any which way you support us or subscribe helps - so we also offer a pdf digital version.

We believe we offer a unique window onto United. We are passionate about our club. And we show it. You might agree, or disagree with some of the content. That's healthy. That's the point. It's not just one view, but a mix of different voices offering strong, important thoughts on our club.

              100% independent, 100% unofficial.

We think we play a very small part in the enjoyment of some MUFC fans' matchday or supporting culture, a nice tradition as well, and we really want to continue to be able to do so. We realise these are tough times for everyone in all aspects of their lives so only subscribe if you can and are able to. And we wish you nothing but goodwill with our best wishes to you and your families.

For those able to subscribe you can support your fanzine at https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

Please share, pledge and help us reach our target. This will mean the fanzine, the website, the podcasts; all that we do at RedNews will continue, offering a strong, independent voice.

And please every single one of you take care during these quite unique set of circumstances. Please stay safe, you and your loved ones, as we want to see you all at Old Trafford soon, come rain or shine, we will not care!

Thank you. And thank you for keeping this voice alive.

              Barney, RedNews

For info; the subs taken out now will start from RedNews274 which will publish at the end of July/start of August. Our May double issue will conclude the sub campaign from 2019/20 - so if you subscribed then and now renew, your new sub would start from next season (we will work this out and let you know). If you are a new subscriber for the first time, the sub will also start from RedNews274 which will publish at the end of July/August and you would need to order the May 2020 double issue separately, unless you tell us otherwise... But we can accommodate any request, of course!

Any questions whatsoever, let us know!

Nicky Butt gives his thoughts on the MUFC managers since Fergie

“I think it’s harsh on Van Gaal and Mourinho, and David Moyes to a point, because they didn’t come into Man Utd and go, ‘this is it, move it all to one side, disrespect Man Utd and we’ll do it this way,”

“They didn’t. They never did – it’s a myth that they did.

“Mourinho was brilliant with me. He spoke to me every single day at breakfast and asked about the kids. He did a few meetings with the kids when they were going to Portugal [in the UEFA Youth League] and telling them what to expect and so on.

“If me and you and Ben [Thornley] and Maysie [David May] said ‘Let’s go and work at Real Madrid’, you’re not going to know anybody. There’s that many people that stab you in the back in football as you all know.

“If you’re going into an environment you don’t know, you’re not going to open the door to every Tom, Dick and Harry, because you don’t know who these people are, you don’t know where they’re going. So you can understand both sides of the story.

“Obviously, I prefer the way it is now, I preferred the way it was when we were there [as players], but that’s because we knew everybody. You trusted the canteen staff, you trusted the cleaning staff, because you knew them when you were 16, so we can look at it in a bubble and go ‘all these managers come in here and it’s shocking’ but I don’t think it is, because you’ve got to put yourself in their position, and if you went out to a club you didn’t know, it’ll be totally different.”

"It’s something that we haven’t had [a full quota of midfielders] for an awful long time this season,"

"We’ve had injuries and you want the competition.

“The beauty of it is the variety and the different options the boys give you.

"They’ve all got their strengths, but they can play together, there are combinations in there that can play in twos and threes together, but they all bring something different, which is the perfect blend and balance. I’m looking forward to seeing it."

"I think sometimes we’ve been forced where the lads who’ve been fit have played and done well.

"When Nemanja and Fred have played they’ve done ever so well, they’ve done terrific as a two and complimented each other and blended really well.

“It’s about getting the right mix. Certain games suit certain things, which is something for us as staff and Ole to decide what fits a certain game.

“I do think all of sudden now with everyone fit and Bruno coming into the squad we’ve got a lovely variety to choose from."

"Just talking about Nemanja, off the pitch he was fairly quiet wasn’t he, but on the pitch, in training, that guy was a scary bloke, honestly"

"Horrible, honestly he did not care. If we were playing a five-a-side or six-a-side or something, if you were on his team, I used to think “please don’t be on Nemanja’s team, please don’t. Because if we didn’t win, if I let a goal in that he thinks I should have done better with, he was letting you know and he would dig you out and he was after everybody.

"Honestly he was horrible in training but off the pitch completely different"

"People always think I'm joking, but one of my hardest games ever was against Victor Moses when I was coming in as a 17-year-old at Southampton,"

"Maybe because I was so young. He was really quick, direct, strong and that was a challenge for me.

"I've played against the likes of Gareth Bale, Messi and [Eden] Hazard, and they were all so good, but I always remember Victor Moses as a really tough opponent as well."

"I think back to when Ibra was at the club, he would push everyone mentally and physically in training,"

"He made you stronger and I took a lot from him when he was at the club. The way he was, he could be very challenging, but he pushes everyone because he wants to win and he makes you mentally strong as well.

"Another one I'd say is Pogba. He's always been good with me. He's always telling me to believe in myself, telling me that he believes in me, so he's one that I'd say always pushes me in training.

"He's always said positive things to me that have driven me on, so I'd have to say Paul is a big influence."

You can help our independent fanzine survive - by subscribing now.

                          https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

Dear Reds, we need your help.

"Fitness challenges set by the coaches have been really good for the United lads. Naturally, we all get quite competitive over them,"

"Scotty [McTominay] posted his 5km time on social media last week, which was a joke, something like 16 minutes. I don't even know if it's real. Harry [Maguire] did one today at 18 minutes, which is a really good time, but Scotty is a joke.

"He's one of the fittest in the team and, if I'm not wrong, I think his dad was a runner. He must be giving him tips and training him up at the moment. It's unbelievable how fast that time is. When I saw it, I put it into the treadmill to check the speed, and it was some ridiculous level, just a flat-out sprint, for 5km. Unbelievable.

"He's a big, tall lad though, so maybe his big stride had something to do with it, but he's a machine. Jesse [Lingard] too, actually. Those two are setting the benchmark that everybody needs to get to.

"We were doing core and leg strength exercises [on Tuesday] because hopefully in the next few weeks we might be edging closer to a return to training. If we're all at similar fitness levels then we'll be able to get the ball rolling quicker when we get back to the training ground.

"Normally we see everyone every day, but obviously now that isn't the case, so it's nice to catch up, see some faces and have a few jokes with everyone.

"I think we're just looking forward, but we know we have to stay patient. We just have to stick with it, listen to the guidelines and rules and just get ready for the end of lockdown so we can all get back to training together."

"Denis was a little bit before my time, but a lot of people who saw him play more than I have just say that he was fantastic. He was mainly right-footed but could work brilliantly on either side, but then Patrice was more my era and he was absolutely world class. They’re both massive legends, two of the best full-backs we’ve had, but Denis could play either side and I’ve seen clips of him scoring some wonderful free-kicks, so I’ll have to just about go for him"

(RN - We love Patrice ... but Denis was better !)
