Denis Irwin doesn't know what to expect with the return of MUFC

Dear Reds, we need your help - https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

If you think what we do is important, then a subscription right now is a game changer for our future as an independent fanzine in the year ahead. No football = no games to sell at. We need your support now more than ever. We believe the terraces of Old Trafford and its culture is a little bit stronger when Red News is around, and that our fanzine still provides a strong voice, and a different take on supporting MUFC that is worth keeping.

So on our 33rd anniversary we are opening up our new advanced annual subscription campaign because without your subscriptions, we will not be able to continue, nor be around in 2021. With your support, we will. We pride ourselves on still being a voice for normal Reds just like you. For giving space for reasoned, well thought out opinion, and for the type of exclusives and gossip you know us well for. And to praise, or hold the club to account, where it is appropriate. To shine a light where it is needed. A different type of fanzine. But one that still holds the same principles as when we first started in April 1987.

We have weathered many storms, including a decline in matchday sales, and all the changes, both good or bad, at Old Trafford in our time, but events right now out of our control are different... We only survive because of our readers. Without advertising, you keep us alive.

If games are behind closed doors, we will still publish. We WILL still publish. If needs be we will make certain mags double issues every second month like our one will be in May 2020.

The target this summer is 333 Reds.

    Thank you - https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

“From their point of view, they will feel they have to win if they are to try to compete for that Champions League spot and it was due to come at a time when we go back two-and-a-half months, when we were flying and Spurs were missing Harry Kane and a couple of others.

“I know we were missing Pogba and Rashford but we would have gone into the game with loads of confidence. It's different now, the first one in, and you never quite know.

“It's a big game for us, it really is. The selection is down to Ole, isn't it? The players have kept themselves fit all the time and been in training for a few weeks. So, hopefully, everyone is in the same boat. The match sharpness might not be there but both teams have had friendlies.

“You look at that first week or so and there are some big games there. It would be great if we won and got up and running; it really would give us huge confidence.

“I don't like saying this but, on paper, if we get over that, you look at the next six or seven games favourably. But you know it's not going to be like that. It's going into the unknown again almost. It's a big game and I'm just looking forward to football, in general, returning.“

Marcus Rashford is a footballer ... and he is a young man with a message

    To all MPs in parliament,

On a week that would have opened Euro 2020, I wanted to reflect back to 27 May 2016, when I stood in the middle of the Stadium of Light in Sunderland having just broken the record for the youngest player to score in his first senior international match. I watched the crowds waving their flags and fist-pumping the Three Lions on their shirts and I was overwhelmed with pride not only for myself but for all of those who had helped me reach this moment and achieve my dream of playing for the England national team.

Understand: without the kindness and generosity of the community I had around me, there wouldn’t be the Marcus Rashford you see today: a 22-year old black man lucky enough to make a career playing a game I love.

My story to get here is all-too-familiar for families in England: my mum worked full-time, earning minimum wage to make sure we always had a good evening meal on the table. But it was not enough. The system was not built for families like mine to succeed, regardless of how hard my mum worked.

As a family, we relied on breakfast clubs, free school meals, and the kind actions of neighbours and coaches. Food banks and soup kitchens were not alien to us; I recall very clearly our visits to Northern Moor to collect our Christmas dinners every year. It’s only now that I really understand the enormous sacrifice my mum made in sending me away to live in digs aged 11, a decision no mother would ever make lightly.

This summer should have been filled with pride once more, parents and children waving their flags, but in reality, Wembley stadium could be filled more than twice with children who have had to skip meals during lockdown due to their families not being able to access food (200,000 children according to Food Foundation estimates).

As their stomachs grumble, I wonder if those 200,000 children will ever be proud enough of their country to pull on the England national team shirt one day and sing the national anthem from the stands. Ten years ago, I would have been one of those children, and you would never have heard my voice and seen my determination to become part of the solution.

As many of you know, as lockdown hit and schools were temporarily closed, I partnered with food distribution charity FareShare to help cover some of the free school meal deficit. Whilst the campaign is currently distributing three million meals a week to those most vulnerable across the UK, I recognise it’s just not enough.

This is not about politics; this is about humanity. Looking at ourselves in the mirror and feeling like we did everything we could to protect those who can’t, for whatever reason or circumstance, protect themselves. Political affiliations aside, can we not all agree that no child should be going to bed hungry?

Food poverty in England is a pandemic that could span generations if we don’t course correct now. Whilst 1.3 million children in England are registered for free school meals, one quarter of these children have not been given any support since the school closures were ordered.

We rely on parents, many of whom have seen their jobs evaporate due to Covid-19, to play substitute teacher during lockdown, hoping that their children are going to be focused enough to learn, with only a small percentage of their nutritional needs met during this period.

This is a system failure and without education we’re encouraging this cycle of hardship to continue. To put this pandemic into perspective, from 2018-2019, nine out of 30 children in any given classroom were living in poverty in the UK. This figure is expected to rise by an additional one million by 2022. In England today, 45% of children in black and minority ethnic groups are now in poverty. This is England in 2020…

I am asking you to listen to their parents’ stories as I have received thousands of insights from people struggling. I have listened when fathers have told me they are struggling with depression, unable to sleep, worried sick about how they are going to support their families having lost their jobs unexpectedly, headteachers who are personally covering the cost of food packages for their vulnerable families after the school debit card has been maxed out; mothers who can’t cover the cost of increased electricity and food bills during the lockdown, and parents who are sacrificing their own meals for their children. In 2020, it shouldn’t be a case of one or the other.

I’ve read tweets over the last couple of weeks where some have placed blame on parents for having children they “can’t afford”. That same finger could have been pointed at my mum, yet I grew up in a loving and caring environment.

The man you see stood in front of you today is a product of her love and care. I have friends who are from middle-class backgrounds who have never experienced a small percentage of the love I have gotten from my mum: a single parent who would sacrifice everything she had for our happiness. THESE are the kind of parents we are talking about. Parents who work every hour of the day for minimum wage, most of them working in hospitality, a sector which has been locked down for months.

During this pandemic, people are existing on a knife’s edge: one missed bill is having a spiral effect, the anxiety and stress of knowing that poverty is the main driver of children ending up in care, a system that is designed to fail low-income families. Do you know how much courage it takes for a grown man to say “I can’t cope” or “I can’t support my family”? Men, women, caregivers, are calling out for our help and we aren’t listening.

I also received a tweet from an MP who told me: “This is why there is a benefit system.” Rest assured, I am fully aware of the Universal Credit scheme and I am fully aware that the majority of families applying are experiencing five-week delays . Universal Credit is simply not a short-term solution. I also know from talking to people that there is a two-child-per-family limit, meaning someone like my mum would only have been able to cover the cost of two of her five children. In April 2020, 2.1 million people claimed unemployment-related benefits. This is an increase of 850,000 just since March 2020. As we approach the end of the furlough scheme and a period of mass unemployment, the problem of child poverty is only going to get worse.

Parents like mine would rely on kids’ clubs over the summer break, providing a safe space and at least one meal, whilst they work. Today, parents do not have this as an option. If faced with unemployment, parents like mine would have been down at the job centre first thing Monday morning to find any work that enables them to support their families. Today, there are no jobs.

As a black man from a low-income family in Wythenshawe, Manchester, I could have been just another statistic. Instead, due to the selfless actions of my mum, my family, my neighbours, and my coaches, the only stats I’m associated with are goals, appearances and caps. I would be doing myself, my family and my community an injustice if I didn’t stand here today with my voice and my platform and ask you for help.

The government has taken a “whatever it takes” approach to the economy – I’m asking you today to extend that same thinking to protecting all vulnerable children across England. I encourage you to hear their pleas and find your humanity. Please reconsider your decision to cancel the food voucher scheme over the summer holiday period and guarantee the extension.

This is England in 2020, and this is an issue that needs urgent assistance. Please, while the eyes of the nation are on you, make the u-turn and make protecting the lives of some of our most vulnerable a top priority.

    Yours sincerely,

    Marcus Rashford

“At around 10.45pm on Tuesday 28 January, Cheshire Constabulary was notified of an incident of criminal damage that had taken place earlier that evening at a property in the Nether Peover area.

“Following an investigation, which involved a number of enquiries, no further action is being taken and the victim has been kept fully updated.

“Yeah, it was difficult. There was no nepotism, that's for sure. I found it really tough.

“I recall I’d been at Forest and Tottenham and I was about to sign for Forest and I actually got called up to go and play for Scotland, so the day that I got called up I was meant to go in and sign for Forest.

“And at the time they were developing and producing a lot of young players, Clough was the manager.

“Then I had to go to go to Manchester and fly to Belfast anyway. When I came back, my dad said, ‘Look, we want to sign ye’.

“I can visualise it now. And I could tell he was quite hesitant but his coaches were like, ‘You’ve got to sign Darren, you’ve got to sign him’.

“You cannae turn down Man United, you just can’t, you know? But looking back, I probably think I don’t know if it was the right thing to do.”

“You’ve got to remember, when I was an apprentice at United, my dad didn’t have the success then, he hadn’t got the power he eventually got. He was under a lot of pressure.

“So it was tough for both of us and I knew, because I lived with him, how much pressure he was under. He was leaving me out in games when he shouldn’t have been leaving me out and he’d admit that himself, one or two in particular.

“But, you know, it was tough. The relationship wasn’t what it is with a normal father-son relationship. I’ve spoken to other people, Gavin Strachan’s my assistant manager, his dad’s Gordon, he was the same.

“He played for him and it just doesn’t become a father-son relationship. It’s a working one which I suppose it has to be.

“When I was younger you’d go home with him and he’d have a go at you in the car, when you thought you’d played well. It’s normal, it’s just the way he is – but it was difficult, it was very difficult.

“The main thing about it is, I wasn’t good enough to stay at United – that’s a fact.

“When they bought Roy Keane and had Paul Ince, I was never going to play enough.

“And the bottom line was, the way United was going, I was never going to compete with that and it’s just the reality of it.”

“I don’t think it affected me because the hardest thing to do would be to go into management.

“But I made that decision early in my playing career, at 28 I started taking my badges.

“I thought I might have a chance of the Wrexham job when it came up but a week later I had the Peterborough job, so it’s worked out well. But I did feel I had to get right my first job, given my name. Fortunately it went very well.”

Sheffield United manager - Chris WIlder

"I spoke to Ole yesterday [Sunday] morning and I thanked him for his cooperation with Dean. We’re in the process, in the next couple of days, of finalising Dean staying with us until the end of the season.

"I’ve got to say, the manager [Solskjaer] was brilliant and has been always with me and our football club. He was very pro Dean staying and delighted in terms of what Dean has produced for us and what we’ve done for Dean"

“He was an unbelievable midfield player back in his day, a fantastic midfield player, but when a man is set in his way with the way he used to play and the way his team-mates used to play, he looks at the game totally different to what it is now. And that is him.”

“When he talks about Pogba, I get frustrated,”

“I’m one of Paul Pogba's biggest fans and when people constantly have a go at him, I am disappointed.

“Yeah, he hasn’t played as well as he would have liked, but a man won’t win the World Cup unless he can play the game. He’s got every attribute.

“I hope he stays at United for many years to come and proves to individuals who speak about him in that tone what he is all about.

“He is a quality player and whatever Graeme has got against Paul, only Graeme can answer that question.

“Not every player can play like Graeme Souness, but not every player can play like Pogba.”

Ole compares MUFC players to furniture ...

“Of course there’s a place for good players and good people in this environment,”

“Let’s see where we get to after the season, because we do feel this squad is exciting. We do feel we’re on the way to something.

“It’s up to all the players when they’re here to do well, because there’s always talk of people coming in and out, and it’s about gelling this group together.

“Sometimes when you decorate your living room it might be a nice chair or nice sofa, but it maybe doesn’t go with the rest of it.

“For us to think about major honours, our focus is about finishing the league this season.”

‘Well, Louis van Gaal. I really shouldn’t defend myself against him, the statistics say enough. Every time I made the difference with an assist or a goal, I was on the bench again afterwards. Memphis was the same.

"When he says he has given us enough opportunities, he is not telling the truth, it’s that simple. Fortunately, there are plenty of people at Manchester United who know how to appreciate me.’

"I remember when we played Inter Milan that same season and I lined up in the tunnel and I saw Ronaldo. I’m not gonna lie, I nearly wet myself!

"This is the guy I’ve watched for years. I’m talking about a baller, a straight baller. He had everything in the locker and I’m standing in the tunnel at the San Siro and I’m saying: 'This is sick!', but when you’re at that level and you think, 'Man, I’m actually at this level with these guys. I’m on the same pitch as these guys, I’m on that level', it's surreal.

"I’m always honest and I’m always open when it comes to things like this. Playing against these kinds of guys.

"It’s something that when I do take the opportunity to look back, I say to my boys: 'I’ve done alright. I’ve half made it!'."

"If you speak to a lot of the kids now and you speak about Brazilian Ronaldo, they look at you like you’ve got three heads because they don’t know who he is,"

"If we take away his injuries, he could have gone on to win Ballon d’Or after Ballon d’Or and scored a zillion goals. He was a baller! He was an absolute baller.

"Of course, we’re gonna talk about Cristiano Ronaldo on that level as R9 because that’s what we see now, that’s what the kids see now - but if you take away that injury, he was sick, a proper baller."

You can help our independent fanzine survive - by subscribing now.

                    https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

Dear Reds, we need your help.

This is our third annual subscription campaign. Each one keeps the fanzine alive for the following season. The current surreal events mean that of course we do not know what type of United, and football, lies ahead for the next year. But we know this will pass and United will return. And whatever happens, we aim to continue to publish, and then be selling as soon as we can outside Old Trafford as we have for the past 33 years.

MUFC has always had a strong fanzine culture, with strong voices all around Old Trafford, and we are just one of many, yet it's vital we can plan ahead without worrying month by month.

If games are behind closed doors, we will still publish. We WILL still publish. If needs be we will make certain mags double issues every second month like our one will be in May 2020.

The target this summer is 333 Reds.

It doesn't sound like much. That is a huge deal for us. The campaign will end on July 31st, and hopefully we can make target like we have over the last two summers.

For less than the price of a pint, each month. Every single one of you can make the difference. And you will get all 10 mags (or if needed, 5 double issues) we will publish in the coming year.

We always prefer print because it is our preferred way, and also helps our printer, but any which way you support us or subscribe helps - so we also offer a pdf digital version.

We believe we offer a unique window onto United. We are passionate about our club. And we show it. You might agree, or disagree with some of the content. That's healthy. That's the point. It's not just one view, but a mix of different voices offering strong, important thoughts on our club.

                    100% independent, 100% unofficial.

We think we play a very small part in the enjoyment of some MUFC fans' matchday or supporting culture, a nice tradition as well, and we really want to continue to be able to do so. We realise these are tough times for everyone in all aspects of their lives so only subscribe if you can and are able to. And we wish you nothing but goodwill with our best wishes to you and your families.

For those able to subscribe you can support your fanzine at https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

Please share, pledge and help us reach our target. This will mean the fanzine, the website, the podcasts; all that we do at RedNews will continue, offering a strong, independent voice.

And please every single one of you take care during these quite unique set of circumstances. Please stay safe, you and your loved ones, as we want to see you all at Old Trafford soon, come rain or shine, we will not care!

Thank you. And thank you for keeping this voice alive.

                    Barney, RedNews

For info; the subs taken out now will start from RedNews274 which will publish at the end of July/start of August. Our May double issue will conclude the sub campaign from 2019/20 - so if you subscribed then and now renew, your new sub would start from next season (we will work this out and let you know). If you are a new subscriber for the first time, the sub will also start from RedNews274 which will publish at the end of July/August and you would need to order the May 2020 double issue separately, unless you tell us otherwise... But we can accommodate any request, of course!

Any questions whatsoever, let us know!
