Maguire says the blame for the Southampton result is all MUFCs

Dear Reds, we need your help - https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

If you think what we do is important, then a subscription right now is a game changer for our future as an independent fanzine in the year ahead. No football = no games to sell at. We need your support now more than ever. We believe the terraces of Old Trafford and its culture is a little bit stronger when Red News is around, and that our fanzine still provides a strong voice, and a different take on supporting MUFC that is worth keeping.

So on our 33rd anniversary we are opening up our new advanced annual subscription campaign because without your subscriptions, we will not be able to continue, nor be around in 2021. With your support, we will. We pride ourselves on still being a voice for normal Reds just like you. For giving space for reasoned, well thought out opinion, and for the type of exclusives and gossip you know us well for. And to praise, or hold the club to account, where it is appropriate. To shine a light where it is needed. A different type of fanzine. But one that still holds the same principles as when we first started in April 1987.

We have weathered many storms, including a decline in matchday sales, and all the changes, both good or bad, at Old Trafford in our time, but events right now out of our control are different... We only survive because of our readers. Without advertising, you keep us alive.

If games are behind closed doors, we will still publish. We WILL still publish. If needs be we will make certain mags double issues every second month like our one will be in May 2020.

The target this summer is 333 Reds.

    Thank you - https://fundrazr.com/RedNewsSupport

“They are a team that has got no pressure on them. Coming to Old Trafford, no fans, obviously they are playing for pride in the league, but can’t get relegated, can’t reach Europe. So we knew they were going to press and they pressed like mad and we didn’t handle it well enough in the first 20 minutes.

"We gave them a soft goal. We got ourselves back into the game, back where we want to be but the second half was a bit of a slog. We weren’t good enough on the ball. We gave the ball away far too much as a team - everyone in the team. We brought a little bit of pressure onto ourselves but we felt we had done enough to win the game. We created chances, we should kill the game off with a third goal."

“That’s football. It is key moments. There are key moments in every game of football and that was key moment. We will take it and move onto Thursday at Selhurst Park. It's a game to focus on. This will be in the back of our heads tonight, we're disappointed but tomorrow it's all heads on Crystal Palace.”

"It pans out how it does. We've been on a great run, we are level with Leicester now on points, so it's up to us.”

Ole says United got what we deserved from the Southampton game

“Frustrating, yes, but it's part of the game as well. We've had so many times where we've won the game in the last minute, and it's another test for the boys, another test on mentality. Can we shake this off, can we be ready for Thursday, with a positive frame of mind? As you said, we've been on a fantastic run and you can't sit down and feel sorry for yourself when it goes against you for a little while.”

“Probably we didn’t deserve three points. Because Southampton are a good team and deserved to get something from the game. They played well. They are a physical, very, very fit side. They run and run, they chase and we never got the rhythm in our passing today especially after we got to 2-1. You can play better but we created chances and played some fantastic football at times. Anthony [Martial] has got two massive chances that he creates for himself and the two goals are very good. I thought he was excellent today, absolutely top-class. Especially the second goal. That's how we want to play football. Fast, quick, through the pitch and then a very good finish.”

“We have been really good on set-plays lately. Defending set-plays is something we have improved on during this unbeaten run,” our skipper told Sky Sports after the 2-2 draw.

“At the start of the season, we had a terrible record conceding set-play after set-play. But we have been really good at them lately.

“The guy can’t get a header in at our front post when we have got four men around it. We will have a look at it and we will learn from it.

“We are disappointed. We got control of the game, we had numerous chances to kill the game off. We were not at our best. We are not saying that there are loads of areas to improve on but we did enough to win the game and a set-play has killed us in the end.”

“We have to keep our head up, we have three games to go. The next one is Crystal Palace on Thursday, if we win the last three games we are in the Champions League,”

“So we have to stay positive and keep working as we were until now. Everything is in our hands. It's in our hands, we have to recover as soon as possible. "

“We have another game now, against a very good team again, so we have to go with everything because we want to play Champions League next season. "

“I think we deserve that, so I want to say we work positively, recover well and we will see on Thursday if we are ready. I am sure the team is ready. "

“Of course, three months ago it was not in our hands. We needed Chelsea and Leicester to drop points, which they did obviously. Now we are a point behind Chelsea and it's in our hands."

“We’ll take it game by game. We’ll think about Palace first, then if we do our job there, like we normally do.”

Matic sees a very important two weeks coming up

“The next two weeks are very important for us. We will give everything, we promise that we will give everything for this club to play Champions League, of course the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, we will give our best to make our supporters proud,”

“I'll give Luke [Shaw] as much time as possible - him and Mason, their ankles are swollen and a bit blown up,”

“I'll give them as much recovery time as possible to give them a chance. Brandon [Williams] should be fine, he has a gash over the eye but if he can see out of it then... we've not trained obviously this morning yet but we'll hopefully have two, maybe all three of them.”

“In the heat of the moment he'll play on and adrenaline gets you going, and then you get a little bit of reaction after. I said after the game that my ankles were a bit weak after many years of football. But obviously Mason carried on and I think it should have been looked upon by the referee definitely.”

“The team selection for Thursday is based on Thursday, not on Sunday. Sunday is irrelevant, it doesn't come into my head at all. It's just Thursday, so we'll see.

“The injury situation, there was a couple of doubts before the Southampton one, but they all reported fit on the day. And hopefully we can give them time now and not having to leave players out of injury, but as you say, there might be one or two fresh legs coming in.”

“Marcos has been in lockdown over there [in La Plata], so they've not played either,”

“At the moment, I can't see him coming back here over the summer, obviously because we live in this bubble, and we've got this squad available until next season.

“So he just needs to focus on getting fit and staying fit and being ready for wherever that takes him.“

“There is a concern, obviously, that they’ve [Chelsea] had 48 hours’ more rest and recovery than us. It’s not fair.

“We spoke about a fair scheduling going into this restart. Of course it isn’t.

“But I have to think about Thursday. We’ve got to win that one, focus on that one, and then let’s pick up the pieces after that.”

“We’ve not really played every three days – we will now, definitely,”

“The next two weeks will be hectic but, then again, we’re fit. Very fit. Our lads have not felt as fit as this for years, I’m sure.

“There are some young lads there that will be fitter than the average Joe and quicker to recover but the way the coaches and fitness staff have worked them over the lockdown or even throughout the whole season…

“It was a big thing towards the end of last season that we felt our team wasn’t fit enough, we got a few injuries. This season we’ve not had that kind of a problem.

“No, it’s not going to be a problem and a concern for us but 24 hours, 48 hours is a big difference at this time as well.

“We’ve not been handed four aces, to put it that way, in the last two weeks. But we’re going to have to put up a poker face and play the cards well.”

Ole shares his thoughts on Pogba since his return from injury

“I’ve been speaking more or less every day with Paul,”

“Of course he knows that he wouldn’t be dropped, but when Paul plays like this he wouldn’t be dropped from any team in the world – France or Man United.

“But he’s been out for a long, long time. There was a question mark before this game (against Southampton).

“‘How do you feel?’ and he felt ready for it and that was great, so now let’s see how he is today or even tomorrow morning.

“He’s been fantastic since the restart and brought a lot to the team.

“There were one or two question marks before the Southampton game about who was going to play but we made the decisions that we did.”

"I thought Anthony Martial was fantastic,"

"I think his endeavour, his work-rate… the talent has always been there.

"There’s always been questions marks about his work-rate and his desire but he’s definitely putting that right and he’s been the most surprising player for me [since the restart].

"I think he’s been fantastic. I think we’re seeing somebody on the cusp – if he keeps this going – of being a real elite number nine goalscorer.

"His attitude all night was a real positive for me."
