    Sjaak Swart

"A substitute; I don't like it at all.

"I couldn't do it, coming on with four minutes left. You'd have to leave me on the bench.

"But, I have to say, he still did three good things. And the penalty, where the winning goal came from, came from him. He did well in those couple of minutes.

"But normally they should have lost 7-1. Brighton hit the post and the bar five times. They (Brighton) have a nice team, but that shouldn't happen to Manchester United."

Each morning we wake up to a cascade of rumours and suggestions of status updates on transfers ... today we get stories of a second bid for Sancho being turned down, new players being linked and the prospect of more players being signed in the days left than we've managed in any transfer window ever.

Which is all great for the clicks/likes, but isn't great for the squad and the chance of success this season - Reality is that there aren't many days left and the season has already started.

In the meantime, Gary Nev has thrown in a hand grenade on Twitter calling out United's stance of the transfer market being difficult to operate in

"It’s appalling that in this market which is probably the easiest in PL history to get transfers done that United haven’t done more yet ! They must get Ole a CB , LB and Forward pre deadline! The others are managing to get things over the line why not United !"

    Happy Wednesday

“It has happened a few times, playing a team in the league and then again in the cup [straightaway], but I think every game is a new story and every game you need to prepare at your best,”

“It will be a new game on Wednesday and everything is possible. We know we have to play better. Of course there will be some changes because them and us are playing games every three or four days.

“If they come on the pitch with some of the same players who played on Saturday then we will see those videos and see how they play and the way they create attacks and the way they defend. We can use that. But I think it will be a completely different game. And we are ready to compete again and hopefully we can win again.”

“It was not our best game of course, and we all know that. But the most important thing is we won that game. We have to respect Brighton because they played some amazing football and I think it will be very hard for every team to take points from them. It was a crazy game, we have to admit that. But that’s football, everything is possible in football.

“We conceded the second goal, I think, 30 seconds or one minute before the final whistle, but we kept believing that we could score in the last seconds and we did. Of course with VAR, the referee made the right decision, we all saw that the player played the ball with his hand, so we won and we are happy with three points. But we are not happy with our performance and we know that we can do much better. Hopefully, we will show that on Wednesday.”

“We knew it would be hard against a Championship team,”

“When you play those teams, you know it will always be difficult and the game showed exactly that. Every team in England has qualities and every team can hurt you, if you allow them.

“So I’m happy we managed to beat them and didn’t concede a goal. The most important thing is we went through and a clean sheet is especially pleasing for the players that play at the back, like me, we are always happy when we don’t concede.”

    from the official site

"Manchester United move on to five points in Group B of the EFL trophy after a penalty shoot-out win against Rochdale, following a 0-0 draw. More than half of Neil Wood's starting XI are eligible for the Under-18s, with summer arrival Joe Hugill leading the line at the tender age of 16"

“It’s a whole spectrum of things that aren’t normal [that is behind the spike in goals].

“There have been so many changes and nuances to different rules. Back in the old days, it seemed simpler.”

"Every game lives its own life and, of course at the stage we’re at in the season with all the games coming up, I think teams are making changes. You can see teams have a cup team and a league team and we’ll make changes. It’ll be very similar to what happened last week against Luton.”

“It’s an opportunity for game-time. We need to build up the squad for a long season ahead and of course it’s an opportunity for individuals to impress. At the stage we’re at, we need to have players ready and available because it’s a long season. But we have a strong and a big squad.”

"We’ve got a big week coming up with this cup game and Tottenham on Sunday, so eyes on both of them.”

“You never know what managers think and what they want. But, for us, it’s a game we want to win but we also need the players to get their season started.”

"It’s a competition you always want to go far in and you always want to try to give experience to the young kids as well and the squad needs to feel that we’re together. If you only play one XI, that’s not great at times. So, for us, we want to win and give that feeling that it’s important this season.”

"The new handball rule… you never know what’s going to happen. You can discuss it all day long but we need some clarity on what’s a foul and what’s a penalty because now it looks like you can chip the ball up into someone’s hand, like what happened to us against Palace for example and Victor [Lindelof] got a penalty against him. And then the header against Tottenham, he’s got no idea the ball hits him. You see the goals scored against West Brom at the end, is that not handball? We need to get that clarity.

"You see other games and other results and other incidents around in the league and you think, well, three points in this league is vital. You can look back at the performance especially in the last 20-25 minutes when we didn’t really get hold of the ball and control the game, when we were winning 2-1. But, then again, it’s three points – the reaction after conceding was fantastic and there are some positives. We’ve got to be happy. I don’t think too many teams will have a comfortable ride down there.”

"We’re happy to be in it and we want to go far in it and go through. Whoever we meet - we’re seeded in the second pot, so we’ll get a top team but there are so many good teams in European football at the moment, so names don’t really count.”
