Nobby Stiles made one last trip to Old Trafford yesterday as his funeral procession visited the ground

Here is the report from the United website including some lovely words from Paddy Crerand

Nobby Stiles was applauded at Old Trafford once again on Thursday afternoon as the funeral procession for the late, great Manchester United legend visited his former home ground.

The World Cup and European Cup-winning legend passed away on 30 October, aged 78, after a long illness. A private service took place at Manchester Crematorium and on its way there, the hearse travelled past the stadium where Stiles made his name as a combative and highly respected midfielder in the 1960s.

Poignantly, it paused near the statues of Nobby's United manager, Sir Matt Busby, and three of his most famous team-mates, namely George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.

Another of his friends and former colleagues, Paddy Crerand, was among a small, socially distanced group of local fans who gathered on the forecourt to pay their respects.

“Nobby was a fanatical Manchester United supporter,” Paddy told us. “He loved the club, he loved playing for the club.

“He was a great character in the dressing room and a great character on the pitch. He used to wear contact lenses for every game, which gave him a good excuse for some of the tackles he used to make - he could just say one of his lenses had slipped!

“To look at Nobby off the pitch, you wouldn't have thought he was a footballer but what a great footballer he was. He had that grit and gave everything he had. He loved Manchester United with a passion.

“He was a great friend and a great team-mate. The camaraderie we had at the club was terrific and we always used to have a great laugh with Nobby. Everybody loved him.”

Coronavirus restrictions limited the number of people who were able to be at the stadium today but the club can confirm a memorial event for Nobby will take place at Old Trafford once fans are allowed to attend home games again.

In the meantime, a special banner in memory of the much-loved legend will make its first appearance inside the stadium, after supporters' group Stretford End Flags consulted his family. The final design, as selected by Nobby's granddaughter, will be displayed when the Reds take on West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday 21 November.

The banner features two images of the icon in action - one in black and white, the other in colour - alongside the words 'Nobby' and 'Manchester born and Red'.

More sad news as we learn that ex-MUFC player Albert Quixall has passed away.

    Statement from MUFC

Manchester United is deeply saddened to learn that our former player Albert Quixall has passed away, at the age of 87.

The Sheffield-born forward was Sir Matt Busby's first signing after the Munich Air Disaster in 1958 and the transfer fee of £45,000 was a British record at the time.

Quixall spent six seasons at Old Trafford, during which he helped the club to win its first trophy of the 1960s - the FA Cup in 1963.

Popular with both the supporters and the press, the gifted striker made 184 appearances for the Reds, scoring 56 goals, before moving on to Oldham Athletic in 1964.

Albert started his career with hometown club Sheffield Wednesday and when he crossed the Pennines at the age of 25, it was at an extraordinarily difficult time for United.

Nevertheless, he soon impressed his new team-mates. In his autobiography, Sir Bobby Charlton described Quixall as “a new blond star of English football”
and recalled how he “played a significant role in my rush of goals. When I broke through an offside trap, often it was to get on to the end of one of Albert's perfectly placed passes.”

Quixall earned five senior caps for England, having first played for his country as a schoolboy.

Everyone at United sends their sincere condolences to Albert's family and friends at this difficult time.

"It’s nice that I got a few days off now where there has only been treatment and I really tried to rest."

"It [my back] felt good in training today. Hopefully there should be no problems. If they want me to play, I will try to play and see how it feels. Then after that we will see how the back will be."

"I have to be patient, but also that I just have to continue with what I am doing.

“He's seen that I have a good impact when I come into the field. My time is definitely coming. And when those opportunities come, I have to be there.

“I'm a patient person, but of course you go there [to United] to play as much as possible. I also think – in the minutes that I have made, in the times that I have come in – I have shown that I can add something to the team.”

“It sounds like a cliche for me to say this, because of course I would have liked to play more, but I really enjoy being in a nice team. I am received very well and helped by everyone.”

“On the pitch, while there is still hard work ahead to achieve greater consistency, we remain absolutely committed to the positive path we are on under Ole as the team continues to develop,”

“While the Covid-19 pandemic continues to cause significant disruption, we are optimistic that the recovery and normalisation phase is gradually coming into view.

“The club's resilience and our strong commercial business continue to provide a solid foundation and gives us confidence in our long-term outlook beyond the pandemic, both on and off the pitch.”
