”It's the worst game to lose, probably, a semi-final. At least when you get to a final, you get that feeling, the build-up, so we've got to do everything we can to get to the semi-final in a good state. Of course we've got many league games before then.“

”Well, of course we know that when we defend well, we've got players to win us the game. The spirit in the camp is really good. Winning gives energy, gives you a boost for the next game now on Boxing Day, and we're in the semis so we're one step away from the final"
“When you win games it doesn’t matter how you do it and you know you’ll have energy anyway. We could play tomorrow, now probably. We’ve won, we’ve gone through, so those changes [to the team] probably don’t matter. A result is the most important thing and we’ve gone through. The players know we trust them. We have a big squad and everyone has to step up at different times in the season. It’s a big game for players who haven’t played for a while, Axel [Tuanzebe] for example and Eric [Bailly], they’ve not played for a while. They did really well“

“You never know what's going to happen in a game of football. The first goal always changes the game. As long as we were in the game, I knew they [Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial] could come on and make an impact. You know how quick and sharp they are, how powerful and strong. So we tried to swap around a little bit the dynamics of the game. Even Luke [Shaw], when he comes on, has got that strength and power to drive down that side. It’s important to have a squad and have players that can come in and make a difference and they did.”

“It was two South Americans who have had a few battles before, not long ago. I think they [Cavani and Mina] met in the Copa America qualification. But no, this was a proper game of football, with fans, some tackles, with some yellow cards, chances at both ends, so I enjoyed it.”

“First of all, it’s great movement by Anthony, a great pass and a great touch to go past him on his first touch and you’ve just got to focus on hitting the corner. Keep it low, with a little bit of curve and it’s a top-quality strike.”

“It was a very good start. In the first 20, 25 minutes I thought we were excellent, we should have been one, two or three up, but Robin Olsen made a few good saves and kept them in the game. Then they had a good spell, just before half-time, but in the second half, I thought we dominated. I can’t remember Dean [Henderson] having a touch on the ball really. We almost did an Everton on them, we were in the box, we had corners, we had set plays, crosses and chances. I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t go one or two goals up, but it was an excellent performance in the second half as well.”
We shared a photo recently on our Facebook page. The photo was nothing special ... In fact, it was our usual photo that we share of a freshly delivered fanzine when they start to arrive at readers homes
But the photo was anything but normal in an unusual year
Its a fanzine that used to be sold on match days outside Old Trafford - something we haven’t been able to do for 9 months now.
At first we feared for the future of Red News. Without those match day readers we couldn’t see how the fanzine could continue
But then we have seen the amazing support from reds - subscribing to the printed fanzine or the digital version, also telling people they know about Red News so new readers can discover us, our summer subscriber appeal exceeded its target, there’s been donations and so much other kindness and love.
We are also really grateful to the reds who have kept writing content to feature in the fanzine, and the ex-players have given us time for interviews.
So it was the usual fanzine photo, but it was a photo we feared that we wouldn’t be sharing again.
Its amazing that the support from reds means we know the fanzine will carry on through this season (our 33rd season!)
We just want to say a big thank you
We hope you all have a great xmas and hope new year brings a return to normality at some point

“I'm very happy with our performance, I think that everyone who supports Manchester United is happy, because to come here to Goodison Park, it's not easy to control 90 minutes, and I think we did it tonight.
“It was everything about us. We didn't allow them to create a lot of chances. So I think that we absolutely deserve to be in the semi-finals, and with some fantastic football also. We scored two goals, we created a lot of chances. I'm happy with everything that we saw in our team.”
“Was it frustrating we hadn't scored before half-time? Yes, especially after the first 10-15 minutes. We had a lot of chances. We hit the post, some the keeper saved, but that's football. Sometimes you score, sometimes not, but the most important thing was that we kept that level of football for 90 minutes. We controlled the game and, at the end, the most important thing is [that we are in the] semi-finals.
“Tonight everyone did a great job. I'm happy with everyone who played tonight. Let's keep this momentum and this level of football.”

“It’s always a tough place to come,”
“They had a few fans in the stadium which gave it a little bit of an atmosphere, but we controlled the game throughout I felt.
“Obviously, they were going to be a threat from set plays and a few crosses, but I think we thoroughly deserved the win and I’m pleased we got it in the end rather than taking it to penalties.”
“I thought it was an excellent performance, we started the game really well. We should have been leading after 20 minutes. It should have been probably out of sight, we had three, four great chances and we’ve got to be a little more clinical.
“But we kept going, we kept digging in. We felt like another chance would come and Edison’s put a great finish in and we’ve managed to seal the win and go through to the next round - which is the most important thing.”

“We know he does that, we see it week in, week out in training. He obviously had a little injury which has kept him out from the previous games, so it’s good to have him back.
“You can see what he’s about, he’s been a top striker throughout his career – so it’s great to have him around the place.“

“We play for Manchester United, we’re expected to win trophies. We got to three semi-finals last year, this year we’ve reached our first semi-final in our first competition.
“It’s important to reach these big games, but we need to now start winning the big games, like the semi-finals and lift trophies for this club.”
