“City can score many great goals, and you can accept that, but when you concede from two set-plays, simple ones that we should have cleared, we are very disappointed. It is just not good enough in those moments. We would have liked to have defended that first free-kick better. That is a poor goal to give away, I have to say. It is not one to analyse on telly here. It was very, very disappointing. We didn’t [do enough]. Clearly, we didn’t. We didn’t create enough big chances ourselves, they didn’t create too many big ones either, but we just didn’t have the extra finesse that we have had in the games lately, in the league, in those tight games that we won. We weren’t good enough today and when you concede two set-plays, it is very disappointing.”

"It is not psychological. Sometimes, you meet good teams in semis and we just didn’t have enough. At the moment, they are probably the best team in England and we just didn’t have enough. When you lose a semi-final, when you lose against an opponent, you think they deserve it. But we are getting closer. This is a much better version of Man United compared to a year ago in those semis. That’s positive but it is not enough.”

“City played well and when they play well, you have to play really well to beat them and that is just the reality of where we are at. When they play up to their best, we are just lacking that little bit. We are just not there yet. That is a big word, ‘yet’, but we will get there and these boys are getting better. These disappointments will hurt and those little habits that will create those little margins for you, they have been good but we can also be better at the little things.”

Manchester United Academy forward Max Haygarth has completed a transfer to Brentford B, subject to Football Association clearance.

Haygarth signed on loan for the young Bees in October and made his first-team debut against Nottingham Forest in December.

Max Haygarth spent the pre-season with the Reds before moving down south.

He came off the bench in the closing stages of the London club's 3-1 win at The City Ground to make his senior bow.

The 18-year-old has now made his move to the Championship side permanent, having been at United since the age of nine and being part of Neil Wood's Under-23s squad for the pre-season campaign.

He scored in a 3-0 win for Brentford B against Maidenhead United on Monday afternoon.

Everybody at Old Trafford would like to wish Max well for the future.

Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar has returned to the club after a loan spell with Swindon Town.

We can confirm that the recall clause in the loan agreement has been activated, ending Kovar’s temporary spell at The County Ground.

The 20-year-old will return to the Aon Training Complex following the stint with the League One club.

The keeper made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Robins, after joining them on 28 August.

“Donny has played well when he’s got the chance,”

“I think we are too quick sometimes to jump on that if he isn’t playing, that it is a failure.

“Victor [Lindelof] and Fred are good examples in my team that it takes a little bit of time and now they are massively important players in our squad and in our team and it will be the same with Donny. He has come in and is in a midfield pool of players with quality, challenging with Bruno [Fernandes], Juan [Mata], Jesse [Lingard].

“I’ve got loads of no.10s and loads of centre-midfielders with Paul [Pogba], Nemanja [Matic], Scott [McTominay], Fred. There are many of them and Donny has played well when he’s got the chance and that is a big thing, that you are ready.

“He is always ready, he works hard in training, [is] positive and he will make differences in many games for us this season, but he’ll grow more and more even for next year.”

"I said before tonight that I felt there was more expectation on this game for me as a Man United fan than there will be a week on Sunday against Liverpool at Anfield. No one this season expected Man United to challenge for the league title, but I think there was a feeling: win a trophy.

"Ole, at the end of this season, will have been there two-and-a-half years, and to go two-and-a-half years without a trophy, it will start to bring a pressure, because it helps you on your way.

"Jurgen Klopp needed a trophy and eventually got the Champions League. Pep Guardiola won the League Cup, Jose Mourinho at various clubs has won the League Cup just to get them going. He needed something and they were so close to a final with this game and in good form.

"It does pose a problem. I wouldn't say, sat here as a Man United fan, it causes me a great problem that in any way shape or form I'm looking at the manager's job at any point, but it will bring pressure down the line. Because if they go to Anfield and lose, people will then say 'glass half empty' again. It can turn like that.

"The reason Ole will not be resting on his laurels is because when you're in a job which presents the problem he had four, five, six weeks ago when he had people questioning whether he'd make it through to the end of the season, when it gets good, like it has in the last couple of days when they're joint top of the league and have a game in hand now on Liverpool, and they're in a semi-final, people think everything is fantastic, you don't get carried away the other way, either."

"The European Championship is coming, he will undoubtedly want to be there. Maybe it would be good for him to discuss with the club exactly what they want with him. If the view on playing time does not improve, he may have to declare that he should be loaned or even sold.'

"I think his playing style is better suited to the Spanish league than to the English. In the Premier League it is often hit and run, in Spain more combination football is played. Donny is physically fine. But he comes into his own better in the Ajax game.'

"You have to be lucky every now and then. Of course it doesn't look great now, but with a great performance it can suddenly change completely.

"We also don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Perhaps they have made certain agreements with his transfer, they will get him ready for next year this season. That always remains a bit of a guess.'
