“I know we can play better, but we’re still coming away from here with a point which shows how far we’ve come in a year or even six months. We didn’t impose ourselves on the game, especially in the first half. I think we grew into the game and towards the end you felt ‘yeah, it’s here for us to win’ and we created two massive chances and they were two brilliant saves by the keeper.

“I’ve got to be honest to say I’m a bit disappointed at the moment, but still you know you’re playing against a fantastic team and they had more of the possession. But still you want to go here and you know the injuries they’ve had lately, you think you go here and get a result. We didn’t, but a point might be okay if we win the next one.”

“We can be more composed, we can have the ball more, we had to defend really often and I thought we gave the ball away too often. Maybe some moments we missed, when Marcus [Rashford] makes his runs in behind – maybe sometimes we don’t pass it every time he runs and sometimes we missed it when he should have had it. So a couple of things that we need to improve on.”

“I think Paul was absolutely brilliant today. We knew that he had to do a job defensively, block and help us with [Andrew] Robertson and he should have got the got the goal his performance deserved. I hope it [his inclusion on the right of midfield] was justified by his performance, because I thought Paul was excellent. I felt that he could cause them some problems.“

“I wanted Marcus up top. Because of his pace. We just missed a few moments in both the first half and the second half to play that ball a little bit quicker or with a bit more quality. It was there that we could hurt them a bit because we knew about their problems at centre-back.”

“It's going to be a tough game [on Wednesday]. I've watched their recent games, Fulham, and they've got some great attacking players and they play nice football, so we know it's going to be tough.

“Every game in the Premier League is tough but we need to go there with the right mentality to go and win the game.

“Not just from the defenders and the goalkeeper, it was the midfielders, the forwards. They covered us and we looked solid. We didn't give them a big chance. It was a great defensive display.

“Victor has come back to the team in a big game with huge pressure and performed excellently. Credit to Vic, it shows the depth we've got at centre-half now with Eric [Bailly], who has been playing and doing really well.

“It's important, whoever plays, in the back-four, knows the team, knows their responsibilities and keep keeping clean sheets as that gives us the best chance of going on to win the games.“

“I believe that one of the most important things that we need to be aware of, whenever we go into any game, is that we are Manchester United, and, irrespective of whether we are top of the league or in any other position, every other team that plays against Manchester United try to do their absolute best to try and beat them,” he explained to us in an interview that will feature in United Review for the weekend clash with Liverpool in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round.

“It was also a similar situation for me when I was at PSG. Teams try to do the impossible to get a victory against one of the most legendary and best teams in the world. So ensuring we are focused and concentrated on this, should give us the energy to want to fight for this badge.

“And, right now, that we are top of the league, to also want to fight to stay right where we are. For all that, we need to be ready and mentally prepared to compete. Like I always say, the important thing isn’t just winning a couple of games, it’s having that consistency of always competing; competing in every game and for every ball, and concentrating to the absolute maximum for every situation that comes up in the game. And that’s what in the end, allows you to achieve your ultimate goal.“

“As I was saying before, Fulham will know very well that they have Manchester United coming up next, and they’ll be going all out to try and beat us, like they have done in the past and just like what we’ve seen with other teams like Burnley, who always give their utmost.

“So we need to be aware that it’s going to be a tough game and that we have to be 100 per cent focused, in order to take care of all the details so we can try to win the game in order to remain in the league position that we currently occupy.”

“Of course I do! I wouldn't do it if I didn't, if I didn't feel up to it and if I didn't feel like I was giving something back to the club. I can't say there's a lot I don't enjoy. I don't enjoy leaving players out. I think it's hard for big games, you know, you have players who deserve to play. It's a difficult job to tell them they're not in a job on a Sunday afternoon but then Monday morning they're back in their job. The chats before, explaining why they don't play, that's never an easy one when I don't really have a good answer behind it, because I could give so many reasons for them to be playing. But that's a part of what I love with the job as well, working with human beings. That's the main job, getting the best out of individuals so we can get a strong team together.”

“I think this season we've scored more goals and created more chances than before. It's only a matter of time before those, you know, margins that were against us at Liverpool tip our way again. We have players who can do individual bits but the team is gelling better, the relationships are working better. “Very good. He can handle the ball. He’s enjoyed training and make a difference in training, which is quite remarkable at his age. Some adjustment to settle into the hustle and bustle of the physical part of the Premier League. I can’t see it being too long until he’s in the squad.”

“I think they've had a very good turnaround from a slow start. I think they made very good signings towards the end of the [transfer] window, and you can see after that they're very well coached. Scott [Parker] and the team, they trust their own organisation, team shape and they're one of the hardest teams to break down. It’s hard enough to go to Craven Cottage anyway but at the moment they’re very well structured on and off the ball. They’ve got some fantastic players defensively, very quick and strong, good on the ball so individually, going forward, they have got players who can make a difference. So it’s another tough game in the Premier League.”
