Sad times that MUFC have to speak out on the racist abuse suffered by MUFC players

    Statement from MUFC

Manchester United has reemphasised the message that racial abuse is vile and unacceptable and that more needs to be done to identify the perpetrators, as footballers continue to be on the receiving end via social media.

Reds striker Marcus Rashford became the latest high-profile player to be abused, after his side's 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Saturday evening. In the preceding days, his team-mates Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial, as well as West Bromwich Albion's Romaine Sawyers and Chelsea's Reece James, were also targeted.

Rashford responded in a dignified manner that typifies a man who was awarded an MBE and is widely respected for his tenacious campaigning against food poverty.

"“Humanity and social media at its worst,”" he tweeted. "“Yes, I’m a black man and I live every day proud that I am. No one, or no one comment, is going to make me feel any different. So sorry if you were looking for a strong reaction, you’re just simply not going to get it here."

“I’m not sharing screenshots [of the abuse],”

    he added.

“It would be irresponsible to do so and as you can imagine there’s nothing original in them.

“I have beautiful children of all colours following me and they don’t need to read it. Beautiful colours that should only be celebrated.”

In an interview with Sky News on Sunday afternoon, United's director of communications Charlie Brooks said: "“We're incredibly proud of Marcus on a number of levels for everything that he has done.

"“When it comes to the abuse that the players are suffering at the moment, it's not just an issue for our club or for football in general, it's society's problem.

"“Football becomes a lightning rod for it and these people won't win, the players won't let it affect them, but nobody should have to put up with the level of abuse that players across the board are getting at the moment."“

    """"
    Brooks continued:

“You hear people saying 'maybe the players should come off social media.' The players shouldn't have to come off social media. Social media is a great tool for them to communicate with fans. They shouldn't have to come off it simply because a few individuals are perpetrating this kind of sick abuse.”

As for how those individuals might be identified, the club's communications director added:

“I think that's something the Premier League is determined to look at, we're determined to look at as a club, and I know the police are determined to look at it. I think the problem comes when these people are allowed to hide behind anonymous accounts.

“The reality is if they are not able to be identified on social media, it's very hard to trace them. Really the onus has to be on the social media companies to do something about that. We need to see verifiable, identifiable accounts. Sometimes there are good reasons why some people want to remain anonymous on the front end of social media, but it shouldn't be the case that they can't be tracked or identified on the back end if they're going to carry on with this kind of abuse.”

Greater Manchester Police has issued the following statement about the matter:

“We are aware of a number of Manchester United football players suffering abuse on social media accounts between Wednesday 27 January and Saturday 30 January 2021.

“Nobody should be subject to such abuse and it is deeply upsetting not only to those who suffer it, but to all those who come across this awful language too. These hateful words have no place anywhere in our society whether online or otherwise.

“A number of these comments have been reported to us and we are liaising with those involved to provide support and we will be investigating these crimes thoroughly. Tackling hate crime remains a priority for GMP and we take these reports very seriously.

“We would always encourage anyone who has been a victim, or witness of hate crime to report it at the earliest opportunity via 101, LiveChat or online. Alternatively you can visit www.letsendhatecrime.com.”

“Definitely not the result I wanted to celebrate my first year as a Red, but we’ll keep working to improve,” he said.

“It’s an absolute honour to play football with the Man Utd badge on my chest.

“The history of this football club was built over wins, many wins. I came here to help on continuing that legacy, and I won’t rest until I do it.

“I want to thank all the fans for your outstanding support. Hopefully, this was only the first of many years together.

        “Glory, glory Man United!”

“He just wants to score goals! [Laughs] He’s a really experienced player who has scored many goals for many teams.

“I think everyone has seen his qualities, he always tries to score goals and is always in the box ready to jump on any mistake and take the ball and score.

“He’s a great header of the ball, he presses a lot [against the opposition]… he’s a great player for the team.”

De Gea feels MUFC missed the chance to beat Arsenal

“We feel disappointed in the dressing room,”

“We feel we missed a chance to beat Arsenal today. I think we did enough, we created enough chances to win.

“Maybe [they dominated] just the 10 minutes they had in the second half. We had our good chances as well, but we did enough to win today.

“If we want to win, we have to score the chances.”

              "That happens in football,”

“Sometimes you create enough to score; you create chances and play well but the ball doesn’t want to touch the net so you can do nothing.

“[We have to] be ready for the next one – it’s a big one again – and try to score the chances we missed today.

“Games are coming quick, many, many games. It’s a big one against Southampton.

“They’re a good team, so it’s going to be a good fight.”

Ole shares his thoughts after a goalless draw v Arsenal

“I was impressed with the performance. I thought we approached the game in the right manner, came here [and] dominated the first half, had the majority of the possession, some big chances – in the second half, especially. Marcus had one in the first half as well, and we just lacked that little bit of clinical finishing.

“We’ll get them going again definitely. I felt in control; of course they have a free-kick that hits the crossbar but apart from that you feel in control. They had another shot that David saved that’s never going to bother him anyway, but we created chances and crosses as we said [we would] before the game. I thought they followed the plan and [there was] good quality by Aaron down the side, Luke down the side – unfortunately we just couldn’t score the goal.”

“We’ve been consistent. We’re travelling, we’re staying together, they prepare well, the mood in the camp is good, in the hotel we’re ready for the games and 18 games? That’s an achievement in itself, so hopefully we can make it a longer one.”

“I felt that we controlled the game and of course a free-kick that hits the crossbar can always go in, but apart from that I didn’t think they bothered us too much. We were a little bit passive outside the box – they had a few too many shots. But David wouldn’t be bothered by too many of them.”

“Definitely Wednesday night was a disappointing one, but today you come away with a good performance. I felt they did what they should do; sometimes you can’t control if you take the chances or not. Of course they had a free-kick that hit the bar so you can go either way, it swings quickly in this game.”

“We created enough chances to score, but we’ll work on them; we’ll get them going again. We can look at this as one step forward after Wednesday night, because that was a disappointing game this week. Now we go again on Tuesday.”
