What a few days of madness in which the Glazers / Woodward showed what we knew they were like to the rest of the footballing world

United were in the Super League, but now are not. Trying to be part of a non-competitive breakaway to earn more cash. (easier for them than having to invest properly and consistently in the team to actually qualify each season for the current European competition)

United even used the name of Sir Matt Busby to help justify the move

Shameful actions from owners we knew were bad, now the footballing world realises how bad they are. The hope now is that legislation is bought in to change football club ownership and get rid of owners whose motivation is outright greed even when that comes at the expense of football.

Woodward to leave MUFC, but the Glazers need to go to

Here is the press release from United on Woodwards departure. It paints a picture few United fans will recognise or agree with

Manchester United has today announced that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will step down from his role at the end of 2021.

Woodward joined United in 2005 and became executive vice-chairman in 2012.

    Ed Woodward said:

“I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years.

“The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.

“I will treasure the memories from my time at Old Trafford, during a period when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. I am proud of the regeneration of the club’s culture and our return to the Manchester United way of playing.

“We have invested more than £1bn in the squad during my time here and I am particularly delighted with the progress the players have made under the astute leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching team in the last two years.

“I am sure that with the changes we have made on-field and to the coaching and football staff in recent years this great club will soon be lifting silverware again. It deserves to.

“I desperately wanted the club to win the Premier League during my tenure and I am certain the foundations are in place for us to win it back for our passionate fans.

“Our world-famous academy is flourishing again, with 34 players progressing into the first team since 2013, and it has been a pleasure to watch talents such as Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Axel Tuanzebe flourish in the first team environment. In the years to come the club’s production line of young talent will continue to push established first team players for their places. That competition bodes well for the future.

“We have also established Manchester United Women and their progress is further evidence of the demand for success at this great club.

“The last 16 months have brought so many unique challenges and the club's work in the community and around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic has been heroic.

“The financial impact on football clubs has been severe, but United have been one of the most robust and resilient in the face of extraordinary financial pressures.

“I would like to thank United’s passionate fans for their support during the good and bad times. I know this has been a challenging period in our history, but your support for the team has never, ever been in doubt. [

“Finally, it has been a pleasure to work with so many magnificent, talented and hard-working people.”

    Co-chairman Joel Glazer added:

“Ed Woodward has served the club with great distinction. On behalf of everyone at United I would like to place on record our sincere thanks for his tireless work and dedication.

“His contribution to the club has been massive, and he will always be welcome at Old Trafford as a part of the Manchester United family.”

UEFA president seems happy to see the water flow under the bridge

“I said yesterday that it is admirable to admit a mistake and these clubs made a big mistake,"

“But they are back in the fold now and I know they have a lot to offer not just to our competitions but to the whole of the European game.

“The important thing now is that we move on, rebuild the unity that the game enjoyed before this and move forward together.”

Graeme Souness talks a lot of sense about not letting the owners go unpunished for trying to "sell the souls of our major football institutions"

        "This is just the beginning,"

"The supporters will not forgive the people who decided to go for this idea.

"They will not forgive them because they come on, talk a good game, tell us how much they love their football clubs, how much they are behind it and it for the long term, and they've been shown to be people that would take the quick money. They would sell their soul, basically.

"They were going to sell the souls of our major football institutions. They go beyond football clubs and they mean so much to so many people. They were selling institutions, selling their souls for quick money, and our supporters will not forgive them. I don't know how these clubs will manage to get back onside.

"It's just the tip of the iceberg. I think you'll see a lot more people who will have to resign their positions once the truth comes out about who was involved and who was driving it."

If you punish the club, you are really punishing the supporters. The players have done nothing wrong and the supporters have done nothing wrong.

"The people at the top will be punished by the supporters themselves. They can't go to the games anymore or if they do, good luck.

"Certainly, with Liverpool, and I can talk with some authority there, I think it's impossible for those guys to turn up at Anfield ever again.

"Will they run the club from the other side of the Atlantic? Possibly they'll hang onto it, but they are only custodians. They are just temporary owners, just a blip in the rich history of the football clubs. There will be owners after them that might be better, or there might be owners after them that might be worse

"But this is a monumental time in our game. If you ask anyone in the street, they will talk about money spoiling our game, and this was taking it to another level completely. The secrecy and deceit shown by these people goes beyond the pale and I think it's going to be very hard for them to start again.

"I think we'll see sacrificial lambs right across these clubs going forward where people lose their positions."

Gary Neville comments on why Woodward is leaving MUFC now, and why just Woodward going isn't enough - its time for proper change

“The leeches could have thrown him under a bus, there’s no doubt about that. Or it could have been that the sensible thing has happened that Ed Woodward knew it was going to get pretty hot in the kitchen for him in the next few months and he needed to get out of there.

“The fact of the matter is, not just Ed Woodward, every single executive who goes and sits at the Premier League table, every single executive who is on these Uefa or Fifa committees, they need throwing out of that club because there is no way they can turn up again and be trusted.”

“Ed Woodward knew his time in football was finished, probably this morning, and he’s probably done that to probably keep away from the criticism that would have come his way in the next few months,”

“However, Ed Woodward is the trunk of the tree. We now need to go for the roots because I said last night on Monday Night Football, I felt complicit. They’ve declared their hand.

“While they were peacefully sat at the club not making a statement, never showing their hand and never doing media conferences. Yes, they were taking money out of the club, yes, they were leveraged against the club. There was nothing we could do about that once the club became a PLC, but I said last night they attacked every single football fan in this country with what they did.

“Jamie Carragher has just talked about FSG having no place in Liverpool, the Glazers have no place in Manchester anymore.

“We have to work hard together to ensure that ownership rules in this country are changed, that we have a system whereby this cannot happen. Whether this is government intervention or an independent regulator. Whether it be a fan-owned club rule, whatever it is, we have to make sure that this is the catalyst for change.

“The people have spoken. We were on the brink of anarchy if this continued. The Chelsea fans who turned up on Tuesday, the Leeds and Liverpool fans on Monday, the social media presence, and these six sets of owners in this country and the other ones in Europe have misread this situation badly.

“We are in the midst of a pandemic. We’ve been locked in for months. We are not in a decent place here and they’ve tried to run away with the crown jewels while we are all down.

“They’ve basically made everybody rise and I can’t wait for the next season. I can’t wait for fans to be back in the stadiums because there has to be a concerted organised, mobilised, strategic effort to change football in this country now.

“I’ve been part of a small group for 12 months that’s been working towards change behind the scenes around independent regulators to make sure that there is a fairer game.

“Still a brilliant Premier League, still players getting paid a lot of money, so we have the best players in the world and the best managers in the world. There will be no expense of that but that there is an element of fairness to what we do and James Milner last night, well done to you.

“Well done to Jurgen Klopp for speaking out because that takes real guts. Well done to Luke Shaw, to Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire. Well done to Patrick Bamford and well done to the Leeds players for wearing those t-shirts. Well done to all the fans up and down the country.

          “Enough is enough.”

Why do these club owners think an apology is enough? They don't care what fans think - They just went ahead and assumed they would get away with it

            But United haven't even apologised

Manchester United will not be participating in the European Super League.

We have listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders.

We remain committed to working with others across the football community to come up with sustainable solutions to the long-term challenges facing the game.

            Liverpool's owner has said this

'I want to apologise to all the fans and supporters of Liverpool Football Club for the disruption I caused over the past 48 hours.

'It goes without saying but should be said that the project put forward was never going to stand without the support of the fans. No-one ever thought differently in England. Over these 48 hours you were very clear that it would not stand. We heard you. I heard you'.

'I want to apologise to Jürgen, to the players and to everyone who works so hard at LFC to make our fans proud. They have absolutely no responsibility for this disruption. They were the most disrupted and unfairly so. This is what hurts most. They love your club and work to make you proud every single day'.

He added: 'If there's one thing this horrible pandemic has clearly shown, it's how crucial fans are to our sport and to every sport. It's shown in every empty stadium. It's been an incredibly tough year for all of us; virtually no-one unaffected. It's important that the Liverpool football family remains intact, vital and committed to what we've seen from you globally, with local gestures of kindness and support. I can promise you I will do whatever I can to further that'.

MUST issue a statement about the stupidity from United in the last few days, and what needs to happen next

              We did it!

              What a 48 hours that was….

Well, first things first, we did it. We’ve stopped the breakaway. The Super League is dead. And based on the overwhelming reaction from fans, the media, pundits, players and managers, it’s hard to imagine anyone being stupid enough to bring such an idea back again.

And what killed it? We did. No, we don’t mean MUST alone although we played our part. We mean we the fans. The reaction from supporters across football, whether from other clubs who were destined for this competition, or from fans whose teams were nothing to do with it, the reaction was so united and so overwhelming that no-one could ignore us. Politicians wouldn’t have intervened without the backlash from fans. Players and managers would not have found it as easy to speak without the backlash from fans. Broadcasters and sponsors speaking out did so with more ease because of the passion shown by fans.

That said, we at MUST can be very proud of the part we ourselves have played. In the last 48 hours we’ve been in meetings with both Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer, and made the case for why they needed to get involved. We’ve done countless media interviews. And we’ve been working with other fans groups to issue statements and plan protests for the future. Some of these won’t see the light of day now, but we can be proud of the work we put in.

              So what next?

The main thing is, we need to make this a turning point – both for United and for football as a whole. We have shown the power fans have, and we have to build on the amazing energy and momentum the short but noisy campaign against the Super League has had.

The government has announced that despite the collapse of the Super League plans, they are going to go ahead with the fan-led review of football they announced yesterday. This is important. We have spent over fifteen years saying the law needs to be changed to give supporters more power over their football clubs, and now we have a government review looking at just that. Engaging in this review process is going to be a top priority for MUST in the coming few months. We simply cannot rest on our laurels, pat ourselves on the back and wait for another similar plan to emerge down the line.

Turning to our club, all of us were shocked and appalled – but not surprised – that it appears we were very much amongst the ring-leaders of this insidious endeavour. For sixteen years now, we have been talking about the negative consequences of our debt-ridden ownership structure and the owners who inflicted it upon us. In many ways, the vile Super League plan was the crystalisation of everything we have been opposing and fighting against.

This must be a turning point for football, and it must be a turning point for United too. Ed Woodward is now leaving the club, but our beef was never with Ed personally. It is not about any one Club employee personally. Many of them are good people placed in a really difficult position. No, the problems at Manchester United are at ownership level. With Ed going, and their Super League dream in tatters, maybe the Glazers ought to consider if now is their moment to leave the pitch too.

But we don’t want them selling off to the highest bidder and fans to just be stood on the sidelines waiting to find out who takes over. This is a real opportunity for the Glazers to now change the current path of their legacy and open the door to supporter shareholding with full voting rights. That can be put in place now to allow supporters time to start building a stake.

A last comment on protests as there are numerous suggestions circulating on social media although generally anonymously. We have our strategy for how we believe we can best progress our objectives but we respect others may take a different view on tactics from time to time and naturally some fans will want to protest against the Glazers ownership which we all wish to see change. While we are not organising any such protest we do fully support the right of our fans to express their views in any protest conducted in a lawful and safe way.

Thanks to each and every MUST member and volunteer who has helped out in the last few days. It’s been quite a whirlwind. Now we have shown what fan power can do we must build on this success. And with your ongoing support, we will.

Nicky Butt talks about why he left MUFC (and it was not to do with this stupid Super League)

"It wasn't a wrench to go if I'm honest, I love the club, always have and always will. But I knew it was my time to leave and maybe get some new challenges and start something different,"

"I was comfortable in my job, comfortable in my surroundings, it was just a personal choice to leave the club because I felt like it was my time to go and explore other opportunities. Obviously, with what's gone on over the last few days, it looks like there was a reason why I left, but that wasn't the reason, my reason for leaving was purely to accept new challenges that hopefully will come soon."

Can you be one of the 334 Reds that keeps RedNews going for the year ahead? Sub campaign now open.

                  Red News needs your help.

We need your support now more than ever.
Target = 334 Reds signing up! By July 31st 2021.

If you believe in fanzines + RN, please do support if you can.
Pledge, subscribe and keep the fanzine going for the year ahead.
Behind closed doors has destroyed matchday sales of Utd's first fanzine.

We need to reach target for the fanzine to survive. Support us or lose us.
                  100% independent, 100% unofficial.

An independent fanzine which passionately believes in MUFC fan culture and giving YOU a voice. Fanzines are important to us. And, we feel, important to you as it provides a different voice - yours - away from the mainstream and official mass. We want to remain strong, especially in difficult times like these - and with your support we will keep printing.

We know there is a lot going on, and a lot for readers to be dealing with at the moment - so we're asking for your support right now only if you are in a position to give it. And we hope you and yours are all ok.

For the fanzine, it's undoubtedly our biggest and most important appeal/sub campaign, one that decides if we will be here in the next 12 months - we haven't sold at a game in over a year, and whilst we now have hope of some kind of a return, we still remain fearful that a full Old Trafford might be some time away. The impact on RedNews has been dramatic. This sub campaign guarantees Red News publishes for the next season ahead.

We've carried on printing since last March, but a significant downturn in orders have reflected the difficult times. If we don't make target, we might not be able to continue; fanzine, podcasts, etc.

We want to carry on printing for 2021/22 - and with your support we can.

We're having to think a bit ahead - so we've made the decision to keep printing double mags next season (21/22). So you won't miss out on content, this will now be six big double issues for a sub (at 72 pages each), meaning, in terms of content, it's 12 mags of the old format for your yearly sub. We also hope to provide a unique subscribers gift if we reach the summer sub campaign target.

We have never needed your support as subscribers as much as now - so if you can pledge a sub, be it print or pdf, you are helping to keep RedNews going when we needs it the most.

We still believe the terraces of Old Trafford and its culture are a little bit stronger when Red News is around, and that our fanzine still provides a strong voice, and a different take on supporting MUFC that is worth preserving. We believe we continue to offer a unique window onto United. We are passionate about our club. And we show it. You might agree, or disagree with some of the content. That's healthy. That's the point of a fanzine. It's not just one set view, but a mix of different voices offering strong, important views on our club. And then try to have a laugh at it all.

So on our 34th anniversary we are again opening up our new advanced annual subscription campaign until July 31st - and the target will be 334 Reds signing up. Last year you kindly helped us break the 380 mark. Please support if you can.

Take care, and thank you for continuing to keep OUR voice alive.

                  Barney

For info; the subs taken out now will start from RedNews284/285 which will publish in August - unless you tell us otherwise. Our May double issue 282/283 will conclude the sub campaign from 2020/21 - so if you are a current subscriber and subscribe now we will just add this onto the existing one and your new sub would start from next season. If you are a new subscriber for the first time, the sub will start from August, unless you tell us otherwise... But we can accommodate any request, of course!

We do not have an automatic subscription function, so rely on you renewing, thanks!

Any questions whatsoever, let us know.

And, just, thank you. And please take care.

                  Glory Glory Man United!

Nicky Butt gives his thoughts on the stupid Super League

"I don't think an apology is too great anyway if I'm honest. I think what happened should never have happened.

"What happened is the worst case of bullying in my opinion, from powerful people, so whether they apologise or not is irrelevant to me really."

“They work in the shadows if you like and they do what they think is right but I think the shocking thing is they can't have empathy for the fan that makes this sport so great.

"Without the fans, the sport is nothing, and to not be on board with what I think the fans want is, that's the alarming thing for me

"So it's a lesson to people who come into the country and come into powerful football clubs and think that they can do whatever they want because they are owners and they are very, very wealthy.

"Over the last few hours in this country it has proved not to be the case."

Ex-MUFC youngster Paul McShane remembers his days at MUFC and a certain Roy Keane

“I remember there was talk that a few lads would get called up because there were quite a few injuries. So then I got the call and it was amazing like, it really was.

“I was going on tour with Manchester United. It was a really great experience. I ended up playing a game, I think it was in Chicago maybe. We played Bayern Munich. Santa Cruz was up front and stuff.

“The three at the back was me on the right-hand side, Roy Keane in the middle and Jonathan Spector on the left.

“It was a 0-0 draw and I think we lost on penalties but it was brilliant. It was great to be with the first team every day and see how they acted and all that.”

“He [Roy Keane] was my biggest hero growing up. I did okay in the games, but didn’t do well in training. He used to hammer me in training.

“I remember there was one training session out in America. I gave the ball away in the possession game – probably more than once to be honest – and he hammered me. He absolutely slaughtered me and I was so shocked.

“I was running away from the ball then. I didn’t want to touch the ball from then on in. Afterwards he was like ‘it’s tough love, you’ve got to learn. You can’t be the young lad forever. You’ve got to learn.’”

“Something that I took away from that was ‘yeah, I suppose you can’t be the young lad forever.’ I’ve been to clubs where people still think they’re young when they’re 24.

“They don’t really crack on, they don’t take responsibility as a professional, a senior player. It was a good tip from Roy but it was tough love.

“I was terrified in training then but, in the game, I played alright and he gave me a bit of praise afterwards.”

Arsene Wenger reacts to news of Woodward's involvement in the Super League and that he is leaving MUFC

"Well, I would say he realised the project was not well prepared, and I don't know what Woodward will do,"

"But, look, if you want to create a Super League with two groups of 10 teams and you come out with only 12, and you know you can lose some, (laughs) your project is not very solid."
