Ole gets a new MUFC contract

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new contract at Manchester United that will see him at the club until at least 2024, with an option for a further year.

    Ed Woodward, Executive Vice-Chairman, said:

“Ole and his staff have worked tirelessly putting the foundations in place for long-term success on the pitch.

“The results of that have become increasingly visible over the past two seasons and we are all looking forward to seeing this exciting team develop further in the years ahead.

“What is especially pleasing is the way this progress has been achieved with a blend of young, homegrown talent and top-class recruits, playing attacking football in the best traditions of Manchester United. We are more confident than ever that, under Ole’s leadership, we are heading in the right direction.”

    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said:

“Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club, and I am delighted to have signed this new contract. It is an exciting time for Manchester United, we have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success.
“I have a fantastic coaching team around me, and we are all ready to take that next step on our journey. Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that’s what we are all striving for. We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons.

“I can’t wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started.”

    Sancho signing confirmed

Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of Jadon Sancho, subject to international clearance, keeping him at the club until June 2026, with an option of a further year.

Sancho, 21, scored 50 goals and registered 64 assists in four seasons with Borussia Dortmund. The England International was part of the squad that reached the final of Euro 2020.

    Jadon Sancho said:

“I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first team football, although I always knew that I would return to England one day. The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League. This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success that the fans deserve. I am looking forward to working with the Manager and his coaching team to further develop my game.”

    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said:

“Jadon epitomises the type of player I want to bring to the club, he is a forward player in the best traditions of Manchester United. He will form an integral part of my squad for years to come and we look forward to seeing him blossom. His goals and assists records speak for themselves and he will also bring tremendous pace, flair and creativity to the team.

“Old Trafford will give him the platform he needs to release his untapped talent and perform at the highest level. For a player of his age, Jadon has already achieved a great deal and showed the courage to go and prove himself abroad. We all look forward to welcoming Jadon to the squad as we prepare for the new campaign.”

Paul McShane rejoins United as a player/coach with u23s

Manchester United are delighted to announce another innovative coaching appointment to its Professional Development Phase (U17-U23).
Ahead of the 2021/22 season, Paul McShane rejoins the Academy as playing coach, having left United as graduate in 2006.

The experienced defender and A-licence coach will combine his talents to provide a different perspective by coaching from within sessions and from an on-pitch perspective in fixtures when deemed appropriate.

McShane will also drive daily training standards from within sessions, providing high-level competition for the Academy’s talented forward players and giving various development opportunities to his fellow defenders.

United’s next generation of Academy graduates will benefit from McShane’s immense knowledge obtained from featuring in over 400 club games and 33 international fixtures.

The defender, who has recently spent time coaching United’s Under-16s, will work as a coach across the Under-15s to Under-23s teams.
Nick Cox, Manchester United Head of Academy, said: “Across the Academy, we have always taken an innovative approach to ensure that we continue our proud tradition of producing world-class players capable of excelling in Manchester United’s first-team.

“This new role was carefully considered and adds yet another level of support for our players in helping them to play at the highest level possible.

“We believe that Paul is the perfect candidate. He arrives as an extremely highly recommended coach but also clearly still has a lot left to give on the pitch. This unique combination is invaluable for our Under-23s team and will further drive the professional standards of the group.

“As an Academy graduate, who has had an outstanding career, Paul knows the club inside out and can pass on this wealth of knowledge every day to our young players.

“Paul will now form part of a team of dedicated experts once again bringing the best external coaching talent to complement our existing group.”

Paul McShane said: “I am extremely pleased to be rejoining a club that means so much to me. I have been working on my coaching badges for several years and the opportunity to work with young players, whilst also playing in certain games, is the perfect role.

“I have developed a great deal of knowledge over my career and I look forward to mentoring and supporting the next generation of Academy graduates by passing on all of my experience.

“It feels very special to be back to where I began my professional career and I can’t wait to get started in supporting these talented players to reach their immense potential.”

McShane will solely represent United’s Under-23s side as one of three permitted over-age outfield players in Premier League 2.

United youngster, Will Fish, nets himself a plaice on loan at Stockport.

Manchester United defender Will Fish has joined National League side Stockport County on loan.

The 18-year-old embarks on his first temporary move away from the club having made his first-team debut as a last-minute substitute, in the 2-1 Premier League win at Wolves in May 2021.

Fish will remain with United for the beginning of pre-season before joining up with the Hatters at an agreed time ahead of their National League campaign.

The England Under-18 international has spent the last week preparing for the new season with the first-team at the Reds' training camp in Surrey.

This is the second Academy loan of the summer transfer window with individual player development again being prioritised across the Professional Development Phase.

Fish will further his development and continue his experience of regular first-team football under Stockport County manager, Simon Rusk.

Everybody at United would like to wish Will the best of luck this term and we will follow his progress at Edgeley Park.

Ole reflects on no trophies but building towards a better future

"Of course it’s exciting. I’m very happy to be trusted to be a part of it. For me there are loads of things in the offing, I think we’re looking at plans for training grounds, we’re planning of course for work at Old Trafford and you want to be part of that. The last few years we’ve improved and we just want to take the next step."

"We’re here to win of course. I can’t say we’re delighted with what’s happened so far because we haven’t won anything, but still, like what I’ve just said, the progress is there and I feel the squad is in a much better place and I think we’re gradually getting there by just what we’re doing every single day. We haven’t got a trophy to show for it, but I think we feel stronger and ready for the next challenge."

"Ever since day one when I came in, even as a player, I’ve felt the backing on this club. Now of course after I signed the deal to be the manager the first time around we sat down and had a plan and there hasn’t been one moment where I’ve felt I’ve had to look over my shoulder. We have a plan, we stick to it, we know there will be bumps in the road, but now here we are and we want to step forward."

The staff are amazing, you look forward to coming into work every morning. I’m an early starter but many of them are already there when I arrive and they challenge each other. It’s a very good working relationship we all have and of course the players have bought into our ideas and I think they’ve shown a great attitude to improve and learn and that’s key. You have to get the buy-in from the players and they are ready now for the next step."

Ole explains why Sancho is a good fit for MUFC

"He’s such a talented boy. As it’s been known all over the world, we’ve followed Jadon for a long, long time. He’s a player that we’ve targeted and we think his qualities will fit right in here at Man United.”

“I think he made a good decision going to the Bundesliga, it was probably the right step for him, the right level and right club. I think Dortmund have shown so many times what they can do for young talent and in the Bundesliga what that can do. The Premier League is a different animal though. I don’t want to sound disrespectful to the Bundesliga, but I think the Premier League is a step up. We’ve seen that in the last few years in the Premier League, and the teams that have got to finals in Europe and won them, it’s shown it’s the place to be and that’s where Jadon wanted to be. He’s been in England of course, at Watford and over on the other side of the city as well, so he knows what’s expected from him.”

“He’s such a creative, positive winger and forward player. He can play wide, nip into the pockets and he excites the fans. He takes people on one-against-one, he creates chances, he works hard and he loves football. And there is some untapped talent there I am sure, and coming into this environment will help him improve as well.”

"He’s got that DNA of exciting fans and entertaining and he’s also a winner. He wants to win and that’s the next step for us. We need to take the next step, we want to take the next step and we feel that he can help us do that. Of course we’re going to give him a chance to develop more and more throughout time. It’s not like in your first game you have to show everything; we’ve seen so many times with our players that when you play for Manchester United that gradually, with the help of the coaching staff and the platform of Old Trafford, you’ll improve as a player.”

"The boy is going to get a chance, he’s going to come into a group that’s still improving and still developing, getting closer, and the expectations are here. It’s Man United and we know that our fans want us to go one step further than we did last season, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Dietmar Hamann describes why Sancho helps teams and team-mates

"It's a big season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United too and I expect Jadon Sancho to be a star at Old Trafford. I've rarely seen a winger who can beat his man so easily, he drops the shoulder and just walks past defenders"

"Sancho could galvanise the likes of Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba at United too"

"Having watched him in the Bundesliga, he makes other players better, creating chances and pulling defenders out of position, and we saw glimpses of that in England's quarter-final win against Ukraine at Euro 2020"

"I was surprised that he was on the periphery of that tournament, he would be my first choice as a manager,' he said.

'In my view, not only is Sancho England's best winger, he's the best winger in world football and United fans should be very excited about his return to Manchester"
