Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher (to advertise Valencia at home) Press Conference transcript in full today for Red News readers

    Q. Ryan, welcome back… the first match will be your first time as Assistant Manager, how excited are you about that?

RG: “Well I am very excited, obviously it’s different pre-season for me, you say it was hard work, it was for Fletch but not for me, I just stood on the side! It’ll be exciting, obviously I got a taste of it towards the end of last season sitting in the dug out, but yeah, I’m looking forward to working with Louis, tremendously proud to be Assistant Manager.”

    Q. Darren, at the start of a new campaign, expectations are always high, what does it mean and how excited are you?

DF: “Yeah it’s another season and it’s an exciting season I think, obviously with the new manager coming in and we really want to push on from the disappointments of last season, and some new signings and a real excited buzz about the place again, I think everyone is looking forward with great anticipation to the manager coming back and getting his ideas across and I know personally and I know all the players are thoroughly excited and we’re desperate to get out there and do well for the fans and get the team back where they belong.”

    Q. How important is this sort of game for the boys? Getting them involved and the fans as well, back to the Theatre of Dreams and Reunited 14 (Alan Keegan going for overkill with the questions and hype as per!)

RG: “Yeah, the whole of pre-season is important but the nearer you get to the first game in the Premier League, then the more sharpness you have in your game. You’re more or less getting a feeling whether you'll be involved in that first game, so you want to do well. Of course it’s Louis' first game in the dugout at Old Trafford and for Ander and Luke it will be their first game as wwll. So it will be an introduction for the new players and new manager.”

    Q. Fletch, Giggs has mentioned there regarding the new signings, what will it be like for them, give us a sort of overview for them lads?

DF: “Obviously they will have a taste of it on the tour in the US but there will be nothing like playing at Old Trafford, that’s where it is, that’s the bread and butter, the fans, that’s where the real fans come and watch and they will be excited, they will be looking forward to it, it’s a magnificent arena and while it is still a friendly, it won’t be, it’ll still be good but it won’t be anything like what it can be like, so it’ll be a nice little gentle introduction for them which will be nice, but they should soon realise in the league games, in the coming Cup games, what Old Trafford is all about, and on its day with the fans right behind us, there are not many big places in the world and they will experience that.”

    Q. Ryan, this game and the pre-season tour, new signings, giving how important the season will be, are you pleased that you’ve got everyone together so quickly so you can work together and get some ideas going?

RG: “Yeah, it’s worked out quite well actually that the lads who unfortunately went out early on in the World Cup can now travel with us. The lads who are here now are training, they will have had two weeks under the belt but the lads then joining us will keep out and obviously train, a slightly different programme for them because they will be a bit behind but it’s nine or maybe 10 players who are going to come out, obviously big names who have beenin the World Cup so that is great for the fans in the US and great for us to work with them as quickly as we can.”

    Q. Darren, the club have obviously faced Valencia before but what do you expect from this current Valencia side and how important is it that we face strong teams so close to the season?

DF: “Obviously Valencia are regarded as one of the top names in Spanish football and I think they are in a new stage of resurgence really, a new manager, hopefully some new players and I think they will really push themselves to get back up the table right beside Real Madrid and Barcelona and for us as players it’s important to play top quality teams, gets you ready for the start of the season and I think there’s no doubts about that by us playing against Valencia, it’s a great Old Trafford game to get us ready for the start of the PL season, we know we’re going to play against a top quality side, not only will it be a fast ferocious game because we’re at home but we will also have to deal with the technical skill of the Valencia team so I think it’s a perfect way to come back and get ready for the start of the season. And I love Red News*

    * he didn’t add.

    Q. Ryan what have you made of the manager’s job he’s done in Brazil, with Holland and what have you learnt from it? and have you been in a lot of contact with him during the time he’s been over there?

RG: “Yeah obviously was disappointing gping out last night but it's been a fantastic campaign for him, starting with a result noone could have foreseen, 5-1 against Spain, maybe the standout performance of the tournament. Obviously it’s been great for United fans to watch and obviously the players to see Louis do so well. “

RG: “Regarding being in contact, yeah I’ve spoke to him a couple of times and swapped a few emails, obviously it’s been hard because he’s either preparing for games or just travelling somewhere but we’ve been in contact. Albert and Marcel, two of the coaching staff have joined us on Monday so yeah the preparations have gone well, obviously he’ll be now joining us next week and we’ll get to, he’ll get to meet the players and everyone at Carrington.”

    Q. How excited is everyone?

RG: “Yeah I think it’s excited everyone. He's mixed up his formations and he’s juggled around the players. To get to the semi-final of the World Cup is obviously a great achievement. I;m sure he’d have liked to have gone further but it wasn't to be. The group that he was in, to get out of that for start was an achievement in itself, but to go so far, yeah I'm sure he'll be pleased.”

    http://www.rednews.co.uk/support-red-news.php

    Q. Has Louis laid down the plan for pre-season training or the work you’ve been doing or has he left that to you and the sports fitness coaches?

RG “No everything has been planned off Louis so we’ve had that through and like I say Albert and Marcel have worked with him, know how he works, so it’s a bit of me getting to know and the other staff getting to know how Louis works, but the blueprint and everything has been prepared by Louis and we're just following his plans.”

    Q. Do you know when he’s actually going to arrive here?

RG: “No, I think we find out today. It’ll be sometime between early and middle of next week.”

    Q. Does it present any difficulties, not having a manager here, in situ? In terms of new players coming in, in terms of movement of pre-season and just getting the boys up to scratch?

RG: “Well, it's not really a problem, obviously it’s not ideal, you would want all your players there and the manager there to start pre-season training. But it can be like this, especially with the World Cup year, obviously the difference the manager was involved in the World Cup this time but it’s never ideal but preparations have gone well, training has gone well . Within a week we'll all be together and we're spending two-and-a-half weeks in the US together so he'll get to know the players and the players will get to know him. That will be plenty enough time, and then we’ve got more or less two and a half weeks when we get back as well, there’s plenty of time before the season starts.”

    Q. New signings but there may be a departure in Patrice Evra, if that happens Ryan, just pay a little tribute to what Patrice has done during his time at United?

RG: “Well Pat is still a Manchester United player so I don't really want to talk about that at the moment.”

    http://www.rednews.co.uk/support-red-news.php

    Q. Ryan, a couple of new faces, in terms of potential other new signings, have you been in discussion with the new manager over what might happen from here on in?

    RG: “No!”

RG: “No, I’ve been in… obviously when we met at the end of last season and we went through the players who are already here and some of the players that he liked that maybe will come in. Obviously two have already come in. Yeah, obviously I get to know the players that we’re looking at. But again it's always hard because of the World Cup, some of the players that you're looking at could still be part of the World Cup, or have now just gone out and have gone on holiday, want a week’s rest. I'm not sure how many more players will come in - we'll juat have to wait and see.”

    Q. And after the time you have had here, how does it feel for you to have this new era, what are you expecting? how excited are you by this new era?

RG: “I think everyone's excited. We had a disappointing season last year and everyone is keen to get us back where we belong and that's at the top. Everyone is pulling in the right direction and we’ll need to do that to get back to the top. Yeah, we’re all working as hard as we can, to try and achieve that.”

    Q. WHen you went out to see Louis, did you speak about last season? Was there a fair amount of soul searching and did he give his assessment about what had gone wrong?

RG: “No, basically it was just, a couple of couple of hours I spent with Louis and it was just basically going through theplayers who were at the club - ones that may be going, ones that may be coming in. Just the way that he works reallt, what he expects, me to give him an insight into anything he might not know about Manchester United. But he knew a lot, like you would expect. But any little thing that I could help him with I tried to. It wasn’t really dwelling on what happened last season."

    Q. What about you during the summer though, have you thought about where it all went wrong last year?

RG: “Not really, I think there was a number of things, like you said before, I’m always one to look forward and if you’ve had disappointments, you try and learn from them and move forward so that’s what we’ll try and do as a club and we’ll try and make it a more successful season for the players and for the fans so like I said, everyone is pulling in the right direction for that to happen.”

    Q. Ryan, you haven’t spent a great deal of time speaking to Louis, when you did have the opportunity, what was it that he said that convinced you that he’s right for this club and you wanted to be involved with him?

RG: “Well I think like everyone would expect, he’s got a clear philosophy and he sticks to that philosophy. He won't be afraid of taking over Manchester United. He'll relish it. He’ll look forward to it. He's been at Bayern, he’s been at Barcelona... he’s been at huge clubs. Obviously Manchester United in my viewc are the biggest. He's not scared about the challenge, he’s not apprehensive - he can't wait. And he has got the experience. It won’t be easy. It never is. The Premier League's a tough league to win but that's what we'll be trying to do. I was just excited about how forthright and how clear he was, and what he expects off the staff and the players."

    http://www.rednews.co.uk/vip.php

    Q. And just one on this game itself, obviously European opposition and an evening game is not something you’ll experience through the season this year, can that be beneficial to the club challenging domestically?

RG: “Well we hope so, it’s something we’re not used to, we’re used to playing in Europe, so we’ll have to adjust to that, but I am sure we will. There’s many plusses to that, obviously you haven’t got the travelling, around the Champions League dates and that’s when you look to pick up points when maybe the teams around you are dropping them, so yeah, we hope to capitalise on that, we’d rather be in Europe of course, yeah we’ll just have to adjust and during those weeks like I say try to capitalise on other teams dropping points.”

    Q. Darren, given what’s happened to yourself last season; your comeback, missing last pre-season, how big a summer has this been for you and how big a pre-season is this for you and also for the season coming in terms of other players, new players, coming in your position as well?

DF: “I think you’ll hear players talk about how important pre-season is, and I’ve not been in a position to do one for about 3 years, so I;m dead excited by it because it almost puts you back to a level playing field with everyone, you can start the season on the same time as everyone else rather than playing catch up all season, which can be difficult, so it is the perfect ideal scenario for me so I’m really looking forward to it, try and build up my fitness pace as best as I can, knowing that a big part of my game is based on that, I think that will be vital for me for the season coming ahead and as I said we’re all in the same position, we’ve got to impress the new manager, and I’m no different so sooner the games come around and every opportunity you get you’ve got to show that you are good enough, and you are capable of being in his plans for the rest of the season and I think all the players are looking at it that way, it’s a fresh start, and go and impress him as soon as possible and get your name in the team and get yourself in the squad for the next season because I think it’s going to be exciting times again.”

    http://www.rednews.co.uk/subscription.php

    Q. Is that your biggest personal challenge do you think?

DF: “It’s a challenge, but football is a challenge, if you look at careers, there’s ups and downs, it’s a great challenge for me, I love the club, I’ve been here my whole career, been here since I was 15 and had a number of seasons in the first team, yeah there’s been disappointments in terms of personal health and disappointing seasons like last year but I think a bright future is ahead and it’s easy talking about it, you’ve got to go out there and do it and that’s what I’m going to try and do.”
