Red News is 25 years old. 25 years since the first Red News fanzine was handed around Old Trafford. It is a landmark we are proud to have reached, and we are also proud that Red News has always stayed loyal to what makes Red News what it is - A voice for United fans, 100% independent from the club and without the backing of a large organisation. Run by reds in their spare time, just for the love of MUFC and Red News

But we have evolved from the first printed Fanzine that was passed round the crowds at Old Trafford. The years have seen Red News move into new realms ... For a start the mag is no longer hand typed! We've also embraced the many new ways technology has found for us to keep in touch with fellow reds, and some of the match day fanzine sellers have even updated their wardrobe!

And we thought, in our 25th year, you might like to hear more about the world of Red News - who we are, and what we now offer to you

Red News "25 years" facts number 1 – the exclusive MUFC player interviews, they are a regular feature in the fanzine

We've had the pleasure of interviewing many a United player one on one (sometimes more than once!). And they truely have all been a pleasure, even with the stress of making sure a tape recorder captures every word and the hours invested to get the chance to spend a moment in time speaking with them. The interviews are a regular feature of the mag...Sometimes, like with the 2011 Paul Scholes interview, they grab the headlines in the national press - other times they pass by relatively unnoticed except to those who read Red News.

We hope we've brought a new perspective on the players we feature. The players trust that we won’t stitch them up, and we ask the questions MUFC fans want to hear the answer to - not the questions designed to create a headline to help sales of tomorrow morning's paper.

Red News "25 years" fact number 2 – You can have your say through the Red News Fanzine

Red News is a small group of reds dedicated to bringing you a great fanzine, website and even some twittering. All playing a part in their spare time when they aren’t at work, spending time with their families or following MUFC.

But we also gather input from all reds with an opinion to share. Some are regular contributors, others just want their say at a particular moment in time.

It might be about a particular game or player, a memory from childhood, an observation on another team. It can be a rant or a remark about United’s past, present and future. It can be funny or serious, short or long. A thought provoking comment or a throwaway view

Red News "25 years" fact number 3 – Independence is freedom

Red News is an independent voice for MUFC fans. We are not affiliated to the club and never have been. We aren't tied to a media owner, web host or major sponsor - we are independent so there aren't any editorial constraints. Of course we look at the world through red tinted glasses. Why wouldn’t we - We love MUFC. But we also love telling it how we see it - Constructive criticism when it’s needed, glowing praise where it’s deserved. Never taking ourselves too seriously and never diluted by corporate fiddling.

And as those corporate types continue their fiddling with our beautiful game, Red News gives fans a platform to have their say. A great big red platform to get your point of view across about our club ... the good and the bad ... a pat on their back or pointing out a wrong ... without fear of censorship

Red News "25 years" fact number 4 – A site that is more than just a forum to chat in

The website launched in 2000, an event so momentus it is said that some people have forgotten in the same year we saw the birth of a new millenium ... It was a new way for reds to keep up with United news, and have a chat in the forums with their mates. A small step for Red News ... One giant leap for redkind!

11 years on and we are still here pumping out the latest United news and providing a place to keep in touch with fellow reds. Cosmetically the site has changed beyond recognition, and what you can do in the site has also - improving style and substance!

We want the Red News forums to be a cosy place where you feel comfortable to use as much or as little of what is on offer. Make use of the content, or just be a voyeur. It's your choice.We've expanded the site so our VIP members can do more than just chat. A lot of the extra content is actually suggested by our members themselves - If its of interest to others, then we are happy to support it. Whether the suggestion comes from a newbie member or a long serving VIP. And we don't ask for extra payments on top of the standard annual vip subscription fee (apart from the occasional competition where we have an entry fee to create a prize fund for the winners)

Red News "25 years" Fact number 5 ... informed United news. We do the work, so you don't have to

We provide, what we believe to be, the best United news service around. But why is that true? Well let us justify our bold statement! ...

Think of the range of articles you see on the Red News homepage - We don't just rely on the national UK press for the news, we spend our time searching for the latest and widest variety of United news you can find in a single place on the web. We use hundreds of sources from around the world to pick up on the big news, alternative opinions and even the obscure stories that relate to MUFC - and for anything we miss, we have the eyes and ears of our VIP forum members to point it out, helping us make the coverage so comprehensive

Now think of the quality of the coverage we provide. You get the news in chronological order so you can easily follow how a story develops, we don't repeat articles like you see on the news aggregator sites, we'll point out the inaccuracies we see in reporting, and we'll help you understand how reliable a story could be (after all, in modern times anyone can post anything on the web without you knowing how much truth is in it)

We also have exclusive news - be it from one of our footballing sources, or an comment piece from one of our magazine contributors

We post news around the clock. When we pick up on breaking news we'll let you know about it

We don't just give you all the positive news about MUFC - if you want that, then feel free to stick the official club site. A positive outlook on life is no bad thing. But Red News aims to provide a rounded view of what is being said about United. The good and the bad ... just because we may not agree with it doesn't mean we will stop you seeing it (and debating it in our forums)

and we provide extra news services in our forums - you can see all the coverage for a particular game collated in its own forum thread, you can search a news archive stretching back years and (for our VIP members only) we also have exclusive news/gossip that we can't put onto the home page

Its up to you what you want from them. We like it when life is simple, and we keep that philosophy alive with our forums. We don't filter what gets discussed, there is no waiting for your post to be checked before it appears. You are free to start and join discussions, you can post polls, rate threads, talk about football or life in general. Red News "25 years" fact number 7 - How we manage to keep Red News in existence

Red News is not a multi million pound global organisation, we haven't got big fat bosses on mega salaries and we don't work out of plush corporate offices. And we don't work to achieve that. Our focus is on keeping Red News going ... Keeping improving what we offer to fellow reds.

We are a small bunch of reds who dedicate some of their spare time to helping sell the fanzine at games or to write pieces for the mags and to do bits and pieces for the website (to post up news and to keep the techie bits of the site ticking over)

The costs come from printing the fanzine ... Paper may grow on trees, but we don't own a forest so we have to pay for the privilege of using it! ... And of course we have to pay a company to host the website. We don't resent that, everybody has to earn a living.

We aim to cover those costs, and mostly we just about do that. Sometimes we need to do an appeal to raise some extra cash - that happens when we aren't making ends met. We don't like doing them, but without them there are times when we wouldn't be able to pay the bills.

We will never grow tired of thanking those who step forward and contribute when an appeal goes out. It means more than words can describe to know that there are others out there who like what we do and want to see it continue

Likewise to the fanzine/site subscribers, and to those who buy the occasional mag, and our email news subscribers, and to those who just send us a contribution without expecting anything in return - our thanks will never cease.

We hope you all feel you got plenty back for any money you have passed to us.

We can't expect everybody to have the money spare to donate, so we hope you bear Red News in mind when you are buying something on the Internet - we post up links to other retailers and betting companies which allow Red News to earn a small amount if you end up buying something from them. It doesn't cost you any more to do it through our link than by going to the site directly. But each purchase adds up for Red News and can make the difference for us.

Anyway, we hope that sheds some light on the time and effort that goes into keeping Red News going. But don't get us wrong, we aren't moaning - We don't mind grafting, we don't expect it to be easy. We do it for the love of United and Red News, and that will never die

Red News "25 years" fact number 8 - The Red News fanzine has exclusive United related content

There are 40+ pages of goodness in each issue. All for just £2.50. Beaming out to reds 10 times a year - spreading United opinion, history, gossip and humour to fellow reds

There are regular features and writers, mixed in with the views on the topical issues of the footballing day. From in-depth pieces to short snippets. Over half the mag is dedicated to opinions expressed by United fans ... telling us how they see it - Criticism, praise, analysis, reflecting and thinking of the future - many different perspectives on following the reds.

We take a look into United's past, before many of us were going to games by those reds who have had the pleasure of a long lifetime following the boys. Key games, Key players, Key moments in United's history.

We provide exclusive gossip on news from inside United (from own special sources) to keep up to date with what is really going on inside the club. Most of it the club wouldn't want you to know.

And as always with Red News we don't take life too seriously. Its ingrained in all that we do. We aim to give you something in each mag that brings a smile to your face. It might be one of the letters submitted from a reader, a mickey taking graphic, one of Pete Shaw's angry perspectives on life or just the editor's views on Mickey Phelan's shorts
