Bayern Home/Away Champions League Match talk/coverage
“Forget about beating the West Hams, and the Olympiakoses and Crystal Palaces, that’s not what playing for Manchester United is about. It’s about doing it against the big teams. If they play against Bayern like they have in the last two weeks, then they will be in massive, massive trouble. It’s not a lack of effort. I’ve seen a few of United’s games and they have lost a bit of confidence. They are human beings. It is not going to get any easier in the next couple of months and there is more pain to come with Bayern next Tuesday. In defence of David Moyes, he cannot believe how tough it’s been.”
“There’s a bit more pain to come. If they play against Bayern Munich like they have in the last two weeks then they’ll be in massive, massive trouble. At the Liverpool game, I thought United would be okay but they never turned up. Against City, I thought they’d be alright and they never turned up — my God they better turn up next Tuesday night.”
“Bayern have been doing what United were doing for years and like Liverpool in the 80s; they’ve strengthened when they’re in a strong position. The players they’ve bought, like Lewandowski for next season sends messages all the time. Manchester United haven’t done that over the last 18 months and it’s caught up with them.”
“We're still in the Champions League and people write us off - we're playing Bayern Munich - but what a challenge that is. You're playing Bayern Munich in a Champions League quarter-final. You don't expect any easy games in the Champions League quarter-finals. We're still in it, we've played some good stuff in the Champions League this season. Our form's been good in that, barring the away to Olympiakos game, so I'm excited for it. With that packed house at Old Trafford on a Champions League night - don't write us off."
David Moyes wants to bounce back against Villa to give hope against Bayern
"We go into the Villa game knowing that we want to go into the Munich game in good fettle. And we're looking forward to it because we played really well at West Ham and if we can follow up with a similar performance, I'll be more than happy. But then we play against maybe the best team in Europe in midweek, which we're looking forward to."
"I'm really looking forward to the game against Bayern Munich. It's been a difficult season for us but we can go a long way to doing an awful lot better if we can get a result on Tuesday."
[10] Moyes compares his experience so far at MUFC to Guardiola taking over at Bayern
"It's been different [for Guardiola],"
"I am sure he had done a lot of homework and had a year's preparation before taking the job in Munich. He learnt German, watched the games and learned a lot about the players.
"I do think he took over maybe a little more prepared and ready and, with respect, they were the champions of Europe as well so he had a lot of things in place."
[11] Moyes feels we have the biggest challenge in Europe on Tuesday
"When we drew them, I felt we'd drawn probably the best team in Europe at this present time,"
"I think most people would agree with that.
"I really enjoyed watching them last year as they have great energy. I quite enjoy German football actually and going to the games but Munich are a little bit of a class above the other teams, including Borussia Dortmund.
"We have got a really tough game and know exactly what we are going to get but we'll try to exploit little bits of weaknesses they have got. Pep has taken over a really good team and added a bit himself with his own style. They have already won the Bundesliga quite comfortably so the focus is on the Champions League now."
David Moyes - these ties are why I took the United job
“Most definitely, it’s a really good competition, it’s been very good for us so far in my short time here, I came into it as a very inexperienced manager in the CL but we’ve done well, and now we’ve got the ultimate test in Bayern Munich.”
“I think the pressure is equally balanced because we want to win the game as much as Bayern Munich do, we go into the game knowing on our day we are as good a side as any, we have to show it more often than we have done but I’ve got great belief in the players, I’ve said that from day 1, and it hasn’t changed, and I get the feeling they all want to play, the players all want to play, even I can tell by their training their attitude they are saying, ‘look, this is a big game’, and they all want to play in the big games, that’s where over the years the players here have wanted to do.”
David Moyes asked if Rafael will make the game, and how Buttner will cope with Robben!
“Well we have defensive issues undoubtedly. I won’t be giving out my team today, certainly not to Bayern and certainly not to you either but we will, as everybody is well aware have to make one or two changes.”
David Moyes again uses his favourite word of try as he's asked about Bayern
“Well Bayern were a very good side last year, won the Champions League, and had a good team and they’ve looked to try and add to that again this season. New manager, and they’ve continued, we congratulate them on winning the title and they are probably the side where most people look to recently. But we’ve got to go into the game knowing that we have to try and come here and get a good result if we can to take it to Germany and we’ll try and do that.”
David Moyes asked if he will be attack minded tomorrow - it's a two legged affair
“I think it’s an obvious thing to say but it’s a two legged, the game, and we have to make sure that the two legs are important, both games, so we have to be mindful of we want to go out to Germany with every opportunity of going through so I think in the 1st leg, I think there’s always a little bit of cautiousness, but I think in the end we’d love to go to Germany with a victory under our belt, if we can do that then it it will set us up nicely for a result.”
