Manchester United players at the World Cup - quotes/news
Roy Hodgson on Phil Jones’ injury and his World Cup chances
“The only one I would say seriously poses a question (with his injury) is Phil Jones. He had his shoulder injury a week ago today. Everyone tells me and my research tells me too because I had the exact injury twice when I was at Fulham with two players, everything points that it’s a three week injury, to be back fit and playing. But we can’t guarantee that, and as a result I will be taking John Stones and Flanagan with us on this pre WC trip, and John Stones will be Phil Jones’ replacement if by June 2nd we are not confident that Phil Jones will be fit but everything tells me he will be.”
Roy Hodgson on whether Wayne Rooney can finally have a good World Cup
“Well it’s up to Wayne and if it’s anything to do with desire and ambition and wanting to do it then there is no doubt in my mind that we have nothing to fear with Wayne in that respect. At the moment he’s where I’ve said to the players this week I’m more than happy for them to go and forget football for a week and go and get themselves mentally prepared for the many weeks we have ahead, Wayne’s decided to take some physios with him where he’s going and to continue his programme because he’s so determined that when we meet up on the 19th he’ll be able to join in with us straight away. So attitude spot on, desire, could not be better. Has he got the ability? Yes he has, so it’s just a question of bringing on the matches and hoping on that particular day he can find the form that makes Wayne Rooney who he is.”
Shinji Kagawa on this season and can’t wait for the World Cup
"This year the manager changed and it has been a really hard year in many ways. There have been times when I thought my spirit would break and I just thought: 'I have to believe in myself'. In the end it has been a really disappointing season, what with not scoring a single goal, but I never slacked off in training or matches. I have experienced a lot in Europe over these four years. I had won the league the previous three years and I think it has been really good for me to experience both good times and bad. Over these past four years my goal has been Brazil and I think I am here now because I fought and believed in myself. I have dreamed about the World Cup stage since I was little. I am not only going to enjoy it, I want to attach my mind to getting results. For the team I think our first game against Ivory Coast is crucial. Obviously we are in it to win the tournament but that is not something you can say lightly and I want to focus on Ivory Coast. I am relieved but simply being a member of the team is not my goal. My aim is to deliver results."
“You always feel this can be your tournament. It hasn’t happened for me at the last two World Cups, but I’ve prepared as well as I can for this tournament. I’ll be ready and fully fit and I’m really excited about that. It’s about the team and as a team we have to do well and I’m hoping I can be part of that. I know if I have the tournament I know I can have, then we’ll do really well. We can all be heroes. It’s our chance to make history for our country and you don’t get many opportunities. You see all the programmes on TV, looking back at the history of the World Cup and that’s what we want to do. We want to create our own bit of history so in years to come, people will look back at what we did. It’s there, the stage is set. We just have to go out and deliver. It would be great if in years from now, people say ‘remember England in 2014’ because that means we will have done really well or won it.”
“Success for me would be winning it. We’re not going to make up the numbers. We’re going to try and win the tournament. I think that’s the attitude we’ve got to have. We have to go with the mentality we can win it. Any tournament you play in, you’ve got to believe you can win it. There’s no point otherwise. I believe we are good enough to get out of our group and good enough to win the group. The first game is obviously important. It’s vital not to lose the first game. But we are good enough to win that first game and if we do, confidence will grow.”
“You have to look at Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge. What they’ve done has been great. Daniel has scored a lot of goals. Raheem, a lot of goals and assists. And then the likes of Adam Lallana, who’s come into the squad and Luke Shaw, a lot of exciting young players “What we’ve seen in recent tournaments, is players who you wouldn’t think can would be stars. We’re hoping we have a few of them in our team.”
Roy Hodgson on Wayne Rooney’s past involvement in international tournaments
"The only thing I would ever even dare to talk about Wayne with regard to tournament football is 2012. There he tried very hard, wanted it very badly - you could argue wanted it too badly - but was very hampered by the fact he came injured into the competition and missed the first two games. This time I am going to see a totally different person - hopefully the guy you are describing that burst onto the scene in 2004, because he is only 28 years of age. He is at the best age of his football career. I suppose you could say if he was terrific in 2004, he should be even better now."
"He plays very well. Now he is coming from a bad injury and he scores a fantastic goal - unbelievable - and he was pressing, so I was happy with him, but he is also a good captain. Always, you make a player captain when you have more or less the same philosophy, not only about football tactics but also about life. So I think that's very important. I believe that Van Persie and Van Gaal have the same philosophy."
"I'm feeling good. Mentally I'm fresh. If you play a full season you can be a little tired at the end, but I'm fresh, the knee is fine as well so I'm looking forward to it. I'm 100 per cent.”
Roy Hodgson - the eyes of England are on Wayne Rooney (there’s your scapegoat then people when it goes wrong)
"He knows what a good player he is and that we as a footballing nation place a lot of hope on him. I’m sure he'll do everything he can to bring out the qualities he has. He spent his week off here in Portugal getting fit. The eyes of England and possibly the rest of the world are on him. He told me he wanted to be 100% ready to train from the first day."
Wayne Rooney on the World Cup - no excuses for his moment
"I've been here before and I've said what I feel I can deliver and what I can do and it hasn't happene. I think this is the one where I have to show what I can do. I believe I am in the best possible shape and the best condition I can be in to do that. I am ready for it. I am excited for it. There will be no excuses this time if I don't perform. I certainly won't be looking for any excuses this time."
“I feel good. I am settled at home with my family. I have no issues whatsoever and I am ready for this tournament. I am going to give everything and leave everything on the pitch. As I've said before, I won't have any excuses this time if it doesn't come off. For us, as a nation I think it is the one thing that is missing. And then for me personally, I feel the World Cup in 2018, I'll be a bit older then so it will obviously be difficult to impact that the way I believe I can do. So, I feel this is the really last big one that I feel will probably get the best out of me. I feel ready, fresh and as good as I can do to go into this tournament."
on him taking the United physiosto a break in Portugal
I missed the last few games of the season and I wanted to make sure I was ready and available to train when the team met up. That was the reason behind it. It certainly helped me get up to speed again and then obviously to join in with the team on the first day, whereas I would have had to do two or three days with the physios and the fitness coaches before I could join in."
"We can go far. We have got the players and our aim is to win the tournament. We don't want to be going there saying we would be happy getting to a quarter-final or even a semi-final. Our aim is to win the tournament - that is what we are preparing for, that is what we hope is going to happen."
More Shinji Kagawa on his own future - let’s have the World Cup first
"I think everyone knows I want to do well at the World Cup, and I'm sure everyone else does, too. But I don't want to get my priorities mixed up here - the important thing is for Japan to win at the World Cup. I'm not using the World Cup as a place to showcase myself for van Gaal. We've known for some time it was going to be him. We've got the World Cup first so I'll deal with all that after this is over." I basically want to keep doing what I did at Manchester United. I made sure I got the work in after games I didn't play in. I know how to get myself into shape. I was able to stay motivated despite the year I had because I had the World Cup to look forward to."
