Manchester United players at the World Cup - quotes/news
Patrice Evra on the value of Carlos Queiroz at United
“I remember the semi-final against Barcelona away when he was speaking with everybody before the second half. The team felt very strong at Barcelona and this was because of the work of Carlos Queiroz. Tactically, he brought something very important to Manchester United. The secret is just to get close to Messi, to not let him have the first touch. If he goes quickly with the ball it is very difficult to stop a player like Messi or Cristiano. You need to get in strong and close; not foul but be strong and close. After that you can enjoy your game. But if you let him get with the ball and let him run at you, it’s very difficult.”
"I think in the Uruguay game he reacted quite well, in terms of he got in positions to score goals, he had a couple of chances that maybe he would have expected himself to do a little bit better in. On another day he would have banged that left footed shot in definitely. Then he still got in and scored a goal and he was our most productive player on the day in terms of getting chances and putting one in the back of the net, so I said he reacted in response to the first game where he didn’t really look like scoring. But at the end of the day, England will be judged and so will the players, and Wayne Rooney is our talisman and he will be judged accordingly. I’m sure he’s man enough to take any criticism that is going to come his way if it does."
“Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out. Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted!”
“I watched most of the game against Italy and the whole game against Uruguay, and I think it is a shame. England played quite well and were so unlucky. Wayne worked his socks off, played very well and could have scored four goals so I don’t think he is to blame. Wayne is a great player. As I’ve said many times, Wayne was partly the reason I came to Manchester United. I never regretted saying that because by training and playing with him he’s shown me that he’s a world class player. He’s a great player and a great goalscorer. He is always under massive pressure and that has been his life since he made his debut. He hit an unbelievable free-kick, had a good shot saved by the keeper, a header which hit the bar and he scored a goal. He’s not to blame, he gave his all for his country. It’s not fair to criticise him so much. He missed three chances by inches, and that is the thin line between winning and losing, between going home and going through.”
“Now it’s up to the FA to have a proper look and see where England can go in the future. It’s very important to invest in youth, in good coaches and facilities for youngsters to play. There are loads of companies trying to encourage people to play more sport. The more hours you spend playing football, combined with good coaches, that is what makes you a better player. So it is important is to invest in youth and try to develop young players.”
“You look at teams who have won the tournament over previous years and you can see that nastiness in them. I think we have to get that in us. We're maybe we're too honest, I feel, as a team. Uruguay committed I don't know how many fouls, clever fouls, really, which slow the game down. I think we're a bit honest in terms of the way we play. It's small margins, but those small things can amount to a big thing in terms of staying in the competition or going out. You see players surrounding the referees — I'm not saying Uruguay did that — but I'm the same now. I want to win the game. I got kicked 10 times and I don't think there was a yellow card given to an opponent. We try and be honest, but maybe that's a fault."
Wayne Rooney wants England to carry this pain into the next tournament
"It's vital we take the pain we are feeling now and remember that and the next tournament we don't want to feel that again. It's difficult for us, but more for the fans. What is it? 48 years? It's tough, each tournament going into it ... we've let them down. Roy has brought a lot of youth and excitement into the team. It hasn't worked out for us in this tournament, but he's certainly got his plans set in place for us in the next two years."
presume as it can affect when they may face each other
“Fifa, for every match they have this advertisement around fair play. Fifa plays these tricks. It’s not a good thing. It’s not fair play. We’re going to focus on a victory tomorrow against Chile and I don’t think that will be affected by the fact Brazil will play after us. I am just assuming Brazil will do their sporting duty. Why on earth are they [Fifa] doing that? That is the question.”
“I can well imagine that Brazil doesn’t want to face Holland. We have scored a lot of goals. True. And we have we scored fantastic goals. True as well.”
