Paul Scholes excited by Louis Van Gaal - he’ll improve United by 25 per cent

    from http://blog.paddypower.com/2014/07/0...e-midas-touch/

“Right now, Manchester United fans (and myself) cannot wait for Louis van Gaal to get the job started at Old Trafford. I’m sure he’s aware of the challenge ahead after United finished seventh last year in the Premier League. It’s not a vintage Holland team he’s managing and van Gaal has got them to the brink of a World Cup Final. He’s going to have to perform a similar operation at United after a shocking season in 2013/2014. Van Gaal seems to have the Midas touch, and with his coaching reputation and vast experience he can bring a lot to the club. He’ll improve last year’s performance by 20/25 per cent, I feel. As well as the new signings, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, (and hopefully more to come) he’ll bring more out of the players who are already there. I’m actually really excited about next season. Van Gaal is not afraid of big decisions, which he showed by bringing on the Newcastle keeper Tim Krul for the Dutch No1 Jasper Cillessen for the penalty shootout against Costa Rica. Krul had only saved two out of last 20 penalties with Newcastle. The evidence did not seem to be there for that big a decision. But whatever Louis van Gaal does, seems to work. He substituted his captain, Robin van Persie, when Holland were 1-0 down to Mexico, and they came back to win. He seems to have a bit of genius about him, and hopefully can work this magic on United next year.”

"He prepares for everything. The coach speaks with everyone and discusses the systems. So we all know we will be ready when something happens. This is the power of the manager. It is not easy to create a team like this but, if you want to do something, you have to go in the same direction and he is the perfect manager to make that happen."

"If a player says something, it hits more than if I do. Robin and Dirk gave great speeches. That was fantastic but I've felt this since we got together and became a unit at the training camp in Portugal. So I don't need to check on them, at all. They know exactly when they have to take their responsibilities. It's not about me or the staff but taking responsibility. In terms of team spirit and togetherness, this is the best group I've worked with. I thought we had more quality than Costa Rica and deserved to win. I don't know how much ball possession we had, how many times we hit the woodwork and how many chances we had. In the end, it's all about scoring."

"In extra time, I felt it was possible. The manager had told me that if we had one substitution left the chance was there that he was going to use me and he did, with seconds to go. We have been working with the goalkeeper coach to come up with this plan but to make that plan come true is incredible. I am very proud the manager believed in me, and to make a decision like this shows what he is about. It was difficult for Jasper but I think he will play against Argentina."

“We thought it through. Every player has certain skills and qualities and they don’t always coincide. We felt Tim would be the most appropriate keeper to save penalties. You would have seen that Tim dived to the right corner twice. We’re a tiny bit proud this trick has helped us through. We said nothing to Jasper because we didn’t want him to know before the game. But as I’ve explained, every keeper has specific qualities. Tim has a longer reach and a better track record with penalties than Cillessen. We had discussed it with Tim. He knew about their penalties because he needed to be prepared. It worked out. If it hadn’t, it would have been my mistake.”

Rio Ferdinand isn’t so sure about Roy Hodgson as England manager

“Hodgson is a pleasant-enough man, extremely intelligent and has a CV with enough clubs and countries to show how widely he is respected. But if I’m brutally honest then, for me, he lacks that extra ingredient to set him apart. He’s certainly no maverick, he doesn’t change matches with inspirational substitutions and I see little evidence of a collective buying into a master plan for England, if there even is one.”

Phil Jones gutted about England’s World Cup

"Gutted, gutted. You work for years to get to this stage and you’re out within days. We genuinely thought we had a great chance. Of what? The knock out stage, quarters, semis? I know there’s always big expectations with England, but we thought that this group of players were big players for their club and their country. And I still think that. I don’t care what anyone else says, the future is bright for England. But, obviously, it’s difficult to see that now when the lads are devastated as they are. The young lads who’ve come through have done really well, but it’s not the time to be picking out points. You can’t use being unlucky as an excuse because you create your own luck, but there were times when we were unlucky. We’ll reflect and I’ll try and look forward to the start of the season,” said Jones. “But I’m going to have a break now before we start on United’s pre-season in America.”

Rio Ferdinand the other night on Marouane Fellaini’s best position - clearly not where Moyes ‘tried’!

"I think his best position is off the frontman. At Everton we played against him numerous times, I see him play against Chelsea, Man City, his best games in an Everton shirt were off the front man. He's difficult to play against he gets that ball into him, he's awkward, he puts his arms everywhere, and that's where he's most effective for me. You can play him in midfield but I think you get the best out of him... Well I think you play players in their best positions and I think his best games for Everton were up there, causing problems for centre halves."
