Louis Van Gaal says the 2nd half drinks break allowed him to change tactics for Holland and was crucial

Louis Van Gaal: The Biography by Maarten Meijer, out in July.

“We had a bit of luck with the cooling break, so that I could implement plan B. That saved us.”

“I first changed to a 4-3-3 and then we created a lot of opportunities with a shot on the post and a fantastic save. Then I moved to plan B and yes, I did that in the cooling break, that is a clever way of benefiting from these breaks. Did you see what I did?! Van Gaal brought on target man Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, took Dirk Kuyt out of defence to partner him in attack and had his team pump long balls into the Mexico penalty area. It's a big compliment that my players picked up on it immediately. We have a modest group of players but they have outstanding team spirit and this is ultimately what led to the victory. They had faith and believed till the very end. The humidity was not in our favour. We were fresher and fitter than the Mexicans. Not only did my players have belief that they could perform today, they also were fit for this match. Yes, it was an escape but in the second half we showed that we could create more opportunities and we played three different systems."

“He will start work immediately at Manchester United after the World Cup. Louis won't have a holiday. He has to start immediately. There is pre-season training and he has to get to know the players. Then there is the tour to America and into the Premier League season. He will look at the players at United and if he sees someone he likes he will give them a chance. He likes to do that. He is prepared to promote. He won't just go out and just buy players.”

“Everyone will know who is the boss. He does everything himself. Louis has assistants, but he does all the coaching - every session. He's very hands-on. He is a Ferguson-type character and it's what they need now. Louis is a good manager.”

"I am not interested in what anybody has to say about how we play. The only thing that matters is that you score one more than the opponent. I’ve said that from the start of this World Cup.”

Phil Jones along with Smalling also wants centre-back role (where does that leave Evans then?!)

"I'd like to go back to the club and cement a regular place. I’ve said in the past few years that sometimes it doesn't really affect me but it is nice to cement a regular place. Hopefully I can do that. It's for the manager to decide the position I play. You've seen me play centre-back, right-back and the holding role in midfield. Obviously, I think I'm an out-and-out defender. I'm happy to play anywhere for Manchester United. That's for the manager to decide."

Luke Shaw says he doesn’t have to be at a club playing in the Champions League for his England chances (pretty depressing as that now means us!)

"You can't really say that because you look at the other teams and they haven't all got Champions League players, have they? I don't know. Obviously Champions League would help, playing against world-class players but you can't just say that because you look at other teams that have gone through the groups and they haven't got all Champions League players. I don't know. I think we'll have a look at it and just to try and move on in the coming few months."

Javier Hernandez on Mexico’s World Cup progress

"We’re really happy, really pleased. We have to stay very calm, very humble and not get carried away. This is just one more step forward – a very important one – but just one more step. If we want to make history we have to beat Holland and keep moving along the path we’ve set out for ourselves."

I thought he played well in the World Cup. Him and Honda their stand out players, just a shame their defence is a tad too vulnerable and they lack a top class striker. Technically, a very impressive team however.

Glenn Hoddle doesn’t think Wayne Rooney is a Number 10

“My message to Wayne Rooney and his managers, Roy Hodgson and Louis van Gaal, is that he must focus on one thing from now on — goals. Forget about him being England’s No10. He is not that kind of player — a creative, playmaker and goalscorer like Lionel Messi or Neymar for instance — and we don’t want him thinking he can drop deep into midfield to become a No10. From now on I want to see Rooney as a goalscorer. That should be his No1 priority — getting into the box and around the box and seeking out goals. I want to see him play centrally, whether that is right up top or just behind the main striker. He is capable of being the main target man, powerful enough to lead the line and has done so successfully with Manchester United. We know he can drop just behind the main striker and make late runs into the box as he did so effectively in the World Cup qualifiers at

He needs to be told not to worry about coming so deep and that if he wants to play in the pocket, it’s not about standing still in that space, it’s about bursting forward I was convinced Rooney would end his barren spell at World Cup finals here and I thought he might go on a scoring run in Brazil so it’s a real shame my theory won’t be tested past tonight. I don’t know what part he will play against Costa Rica as Roy has left him out of a new-look line-up to give everyone in the squad some game time. Rooney has got 40 goals and might have added more over the two matches. He could easily have had three or four, having left Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera for dead with his first-half free-kick. He hit the bar from close range with a header and should have put a couple more chances away when he had sight of goal. The way he jumped for the header, getting so much height, showed his aggression and determination to do well for England but he needed to be more in the ‘pose’ positions, inside the box.”

Chris Smalling thanks the England fans

"It was a really touching moment that they were really right behind us at the end. Even when we got to the hotel in Belo Horizonte, they were cheering us all the way despite the disappointment. You could accept it if they turned on us but they didn't - they have been terrific all the way through, it was great to see and it will drive us on for next time to make sure we deliver."

Chris Smalling wants to be centre-back at Manchester United and cement that position

"It's the end of the season so obviously we will go on a break and next season I will look to really kick on and cement my position. Roy knows that I am a centre-back and I really want to cement it and be that number one. I feel that if I get my chance like I did today, I can go out there and deliver. Hopefully if I can go back to my club in the summer and really cement it, I can hopefully cement it for England as well. I am ready for this chance and it is about time I took it."
