    David Moyes - why aren’t people being patient with Marouane Fellaini at United

    border="0">

    in the Times

    “Marouane was never seen as someone who would play 45 games a season. He was coming in to provide an option, a different, more physical threat, to those United already possessed, who could be deployed in the right situations. He’s not the only player to join a club and require time to settle. When I was at Everton, it took Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines six months to establish themselves and Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, I believe, went through a similar process at United. For some reason Marouane hasn’t been given same grace as others.”

    More David Moyes on Marouane Fellaini - he’s a Number 8

    in the Times

    “It’s because he is such an unusual player. His size is such a threat to the opposition. He’s technically gifted, especially when it comes to chest control, and he’s formidable in the air — though, actually, I feel he should score more headers than he does. He can run. He has brilliant fitness, a brilliant attitude. He’s hard to categorise: not really a No 10 and not a controlling midfield No 4 but more what they say on the continent is a No 8 - a box-to-box midfielder who has great ability and physical presence in both penalty areas.”

    Javier Hernandez feels less stress playing at this World Cup and says he’s not been given faith (at Utd?)

    "I feel like a weight has been lifted. But I just enjoy playing football, I love having fun on the field. I’ve had games where a lot of people said I played really well, even without having a single shot on goal. That’s one of the nice things about football, it’s not only about scoring goals. Of course they're important, but, when you’re a footballer, you also need to work with your team-mates and put them first. This whole year has been very tough. Players need confidence more than anything else, and I’ve been very short of it. Very few people have shown faith in me over this past year.”

    “I’d like to dedicate this to my grandfather, who’s about to turn 85, but has still made the effort to be here in Brazil. It’s for all those who’ve been with me in the good times and the bad, like my wife and my family. They know that I’m always happy to work hardest during the toughest times."

    Roy Hodgson on Gary Neville’s future

    “The first thing I’d say to him is don’t be in too much of a rush to do anything. Having a long career in football gets harder and harder. The number of jobs available, vis-a-vis the amount of time people spend in those jobs, gets less and less, so I certainly wouldn’t advise him to jump at the first opportunity to do coaching or management. The longer he can combine the two roles, the better. He’s learning a lot in the environment with us, working with more experienced coaches and top players, and that’s beneficial to him. He’s doing a very good job on the TV. So my advice to him would be: Keep it going for as long as you feel you want to keep it going. But I don’t have any doubt that he will become a top-class football coach and manager. It’s just a question of when he decides to leave the punditry behind and go in to the job of working with players. He likes working with players and he’s good at it.”

    “It was a match of the highest quality. We limited Chile to a handful of opportunities, we neutralised them extremely effectively - and particularly in the second half we created more chances. We did have to change our style - and I will always pick a system and a strategy that will help us win. However, we’re not perfect - in possession we still need to improve, but I do think we’re very good without the ball.”

    Juan Mata on David Moyes

    “I will always be grateful for him. He called me, told me how much he thought of me and how much he wanted me to come to the team. Unfortunately things did not work for him, the team and the club. But I wish him the best for the future. I think he was a good man. It was a decision from the club. All I can say is I wish him the best for the future. Because I will always be grateful to him.”

    Juan Mata on Wayne Rooney’s World Cup

    “For me Wayne is one of the best English players – in history, not just now. He always tried his best with Manchester United and England. I think he did well in both games. He tried to perform at his level; he scored a goal. But football is not just one man. It is a team sport. I don’t know what they say about him. But I think he is one of England’s most important players, that’s for sure.”

    "So far, I think that the strikers who perform so well in Europe - Suarez, Messi, Muller, Benzema, but also our strikers, Robben and van Persie - have really shown their worth to their teams. I think it's been a long time since that that was the case. It's really impressive that these players, despite the high expectations and pressure on them, have still been able to show what their true value is."

    Wayne Rooney on hoping to break Bobby Charlton’s England scoring record

    "Sir Bobby's record is within touching distance. I’ll be disappointed if I don't do it. I feel I have many years left. If I don't get the 10 goals required to beat the record, I'll have no one to blame but myself. It would be a great achievement. But this is about the team. Collectively, we're disappointed. I don't really want to be talking about my chances of breaking records when we're all hurting."
