    Patrice Evra on the value of Carlos Queiroz at United

    “I remember the semi-final against Barcelona away when he was speaking with everybody before the second half. The team felt very strong at Barcelona and this was because of the work of Carlos Queiroz. Tactically, he brought something very important to Manchester United. The secret is just to get close to Messi, to not let him have the first touch. If he goes quickly with the ball it is very difficult to stop a player like Messi or Cristiano. You need to get in strong and close; not foul but be strong and close. After that you can enjoy your game. But if you let him get with the ball and let him run at you, it’s very difficult.”

    “If you lose possession of the ball so simply and so often, then it doesn’t matter which formation you play. So as a coach, I needed to change something at half-time. I had to change their mind-set because they needed to play the ball round, and you can do that by means of a different strategy –something to hold on to – and they will have faith and hope. Fortunately it turned out OK, but it could just as well have turned out different.”

    "We have to win. That's all I can say. We have prepared for it over the past several days. All I can say is we will win. We need to achieve the result. I would ask: 'What have we been doing for the last four years?' if we get discouraged already. I will shift my mind and do my best on Thursday."

    Marouane Fellaini on his difficult year

    border="0">

    "Everybody knows my club season was one to forget. I’m the same Marouane. United signed me one year ago. There have been some positives and some negatives, like the bad injury I picked up. Also, our team didn’t quite click into place. But now, we have a new manager: we’ll see what happens next season. In the meantime, I am concentrating on my national team. I scored the goal for the team here, my family and for Belgium. I felt relieved and my goal made me happy, that's all. The coach decides on the team. Wherever he puts me, I will do my best."

    Patrice Evra thinks it’s a miracle he’s at this World Cup

    "I am a miracle of the French team, not even compared to the 2010 World Cup, but when I think of those who participated in the play-offs who are not here; Eric Abidal, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy. I also think of two who left Clairefontaine before the tournament; it almost made me cry when Franck Ribery and Clement Grenier left. I tell myself I am lucky to be here."

    Jan Vertonghen not sure United knew how to use Marouane Fellaini

    border="0">

    "Marouane always is very important for the Belgian team. I know there has been a lot of pressure on him from the fans in England, but in Belgium he always does well and scores goals. I’m very pleased for him and I gave him a little hug after the game because I know that goal meant a lot to him. Marouane is a very cool guy. The pressure doesn’t really bother him too much. We know how to use him and I don’t know whether they do in his other team.”

    Patrice Evra on England tonight

    “I just wish the English good luck for tomorrow. I don’t have much more to say because many of my friends are playing for that team. Before we left, we were teasing each other, saying either France or England will not make it to the knockout stage. But seriously, I wish them good luck.”

    "Van Gaal is a great coach. He has enjoyed a good start in this World Cup. Robin told me that he's a coach who likes discipline. That's good because I love discipline - don't forget I played under Sir Alex Ferguson! He is a good choice for Manchester United."

    Patrice Evra says it’s scary that France are doing well and he loves himself

    "The scary thing about this France squad is that everything is fine. There are no problems with egos. We feel proud to wear the shirt. In 2010, I took my role too seriously. I always love myself. I know that's a little arrogant but I loved the Pat of 2010 and I love the Pat of 2014."

    Patrice Evra says the last World Cup killed him

    "The 2010 World Cup destroyed me. I hate to be popular or appear in the media. I've never had a problem with the French fans. They were always positive with me but the press transmitted a wrong picture of me, being the bad boy. Personally, what matters to me is what my teammates think of me.”

    Patrice Evra says the French are a happy camp

    “You need everyone in the World Cup, you cannot give up because you’re not starting a game. We do not have a problem with egos in this team. Nothing’s ever certain with Deschamps. That’s why I like to work with him. He never gives you presents. He’ll look you in the eyes and say, ‘Pat, if you mess up I won’t spare you’. I know that if I step out of line I’m out of this team. I have faith in this squad, and that’s a great strength. The star isn’t one player, it’s the team.”

    Shinji Kagawa on his poor performance in Japan’s first game - sounds like confidence is shot

    "If this is the result, this says a lot about me. I lost a battle with myself. There was pressure and nerves and at the start I made mistakes and I'm taking a good look at myself. I couldn't get into a good rhythm and was beaten psychologically. We went into the match thinking we would be able to do well going forward, but both myself and the team were stiff and couldn't move well. We can't let it end here. I still think we can play well and hopefully we can fix things. In order to win our second and third games we just have to continue believing in ourselves."
